Well, not without Unsanity's "LabelsX", anyway:

Which gives her yet another reason not to upgrade to Leopard just yet,
since there's not a 10.5-compatible version. I gladly payed the
shareware fee for this way back when Apple hadn't yet included labels in
OS X and had been using it ever since, until Leopard.

You're a bigger hold-out than me, then. Be proud! I gave up my haxies
a year or so ago. *grin*

I'll tell you, I'd been using Unsanity's Labels X and FruitMenu all
along from whenever they were first released, until Leopard, and for
some time I also used WindowShade X as well, never without any problems.
For years I've read all about the evils of haxies here, yet I've never
personally encountered any problems.

I've encountered exactly one. A very strange conflict with DragThing (I
don't remember the exact details, but I remember it was very
aggravating) that I never could get either developer to help with, in
the end, due to finger pointing and general distrust of haxies. At the
time, DragThing was far more important than my haxies to me. So I did
the only thing I could do: I started curtailing my use of Unsanity
stuff, and the problem vanished.
And for a bit of irony: I don't use DragThing anymore (I found
QuickSilver religion), but I still don't use or feel the need for
Unsanity's stuff. : D

Another bit of irony is that I've been using DragThing all along, back
to pre-OS X days, and have never encountered such a conflict. Of
course, there's so much to DragThing that you and I may be using it very
differently, and who knows what else may have been involved in your
situation.
I've been fine without FruitMenu, although I'd go back to it if it were
available, but I mourn the loss of Labels X.

Is it possible the same things can be accomplished through a different
approach? I have no programming background, so I have no idea.

It's interesting to learn that I'd likely be in a similar position even
if I were still running 10.4.11. I'm going to take a look at SunnyMenu
now, but I've never much cared for the Mac OS X labels behavior.

OK, thanks. I am not big on these haxies. I would have to
consider how strongly I feel about putting up with rounded
corners and also weigh up the other alternative: not using labels
much (which must be easy to do because until yesterday, I almost
never used them in Finder windows).
Come to think of it, the rounded corners do not look so bad to me
when highlighting names on the desktop items (which I have used
for a long time). The latter, by the way, is almost crucial
because I constantly need to grab some clipping and open up
things after revealing the desktop with F11. (Once you have
pressed F11, I have heard, you have to be quick and get what you
want or your computer explodes and takes off your head)

An inner voice - or is it my nose - has stopped me moving beyond
4.10
I have the package installed but every time I look at it, I can't
get myself to install it. Or perhaps it is something more
myterious like in the Bunuel film, The Exterminating Angel where
dinner party guests are unable to leave the room they are
gathered in. There is some sort of invisible barrier. They make
excuse (rationalizations) as to why they cannot get out.
