Post subject: LaserJet 5 Question on OSX.3
Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>misc (more info?)

Hello,

I just got a used LaserJet 5.

I added a jetdirect J2552 card in order to connect the printer to
a Mac with OSX.3 and print with IP. The ether link was working with an
other printer and seems OK on the switch.

The card seems to be recognized, for the menus show an additionnal ITF
MOD HP menu.

The status page shows OK for TCP/IP :
config : DHCP
addr : 192.168.1.34 (good on my lan)
mask : 255.255.255.0 (right)
router : 192.168.1.1 (right again)
dhcp-srv : 192.168.1.1 (ok)

So, everything seems right but printer config won't find the printer,
whatever IP connection type i choose (IP printing/HP jetdirect; via IP
HP/auto). (LJ5 drivers are installed with my OSX).

What am I missing ? Any idea, info or link ?

TIA.

My laserjet 5MP with a JetDirect cards works on OS X 10.3. My JetDirect

Thanks for your answer !
In the meantime, I finally figured out...i should provide its ip...
And it worked fine when I provided the DHCP allocated address.

Great ! I didn't even know you could telnet the card !
But where/how do you bind the name to the ip ? I can still only reach
the server by ip, not by the name i've given it in printer config.
However printing works.

BTW, as I got no user guide with the printer and didn't find info for
this on the HP site, would you know where/how to open the printer in
order to add some ram and a module to make it PS ?

Thanks again for your help.

Loosen the Philips screw, above the JetDirect card, that secures the
plastic side panel, slide the panel toward the rear a few centimeters to
allow it to be tilted outward and removed. Another Philips screw on the
exposed metal side secures a metal door covering the SIMM slots on the
logic board.

Older LaserJets are quite particular about the memory they will accept.
It is not just a matter of size and speed, but how the jumpers on the
module identify it to theprinter's memory controller. An incompatible
SIMM won't damage the LaserJet, but will generate an error message at
startup.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

The method that works with my LaserJet 5M is "IP Printing" and
"Socket/HP JetDirect". I think that the "hp IP Printing" method is only
for newer HP printers. Our vintage models have no provision for
discovery or automatic configuration via TCP/IP, only via AppleTalk.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Thanks ! that did it.

Thanks for the info. That made me both more anxious and more
comfortable while inserting the modules.

The PS and ram modules were specified for LJ5, and they work as
advertised.

Yes thanks : IP printing is working.

I was puzzled to see that AppleTalk will work too on an ether link
since I've put the PS module. It will provide auto discovery. But I
suspect this should be slower than IP/Socket. I still have some tests
to make.

Thanks for your help !
