In panther, the built-in printer description files (PPD) for LaserJet
4 and 4M only supports 600 dpi printing, does anybody have a PDD file
for 300 dpi you could share?

Any help in this matter would be most appreciated, thank you,
Mike

If you do not get one: Open a copy of the existing one (eg with
TextEdit), and search for an entry
*DefaultResolution: 600dpi
You could change that one to 300dpi.
At least this is how it works with PostScript printers (I just took a
look at my Lexmark Optra R+, an old printer that supports Postscript.)

HTH

Yes, I could do this with textedit. How about the LPI value (85 lpi /
600 dpi), should (could) it be changed too?

Lexmark Optra - IBM's house brand rebadged - great printers!

Thank you very much for your help,

I do not know - that's why I recommend a copy of the file, to experiment.
Just try it and see.

Sorry

Mike-

Editing the PPD file with a text editor should produce what you asked for, as
Marc suggested.

Another way to acomplish almost the same thing, is to use the HP LaserJet
Utility to change the setting for resolution. I don't know if they have an OS
X version, but the OS 9 version works in Classic mode. If you don't have a
copy, it can be downloaded from the HP web site.

The difference between doing it this way and modifying the PPD file, is that it
will be changed for all users (unless the PPD file can over-ride it).

Thank you.

No, I haven't seen the utility for OS X, the PPD files, however,
resides in main library folder so, correct me if I'm wrong, all users
should have access to them.

Thanks again,

Mike-

All users of that machine probably do. I'm old fashioned and consider other
users to have other machines.
