I thought I had to buy from Apple. When I checked the site for Ram, they
were only showing a 2gig stick as available for my system. I didn't
realize I could buy matched ram at other sources.
Thanks

Indeed. I have similar problem, all 3 slots filled on a QS to
make 1 GB and to go up (with ease) to 1.5 it would cost me $240
Aust for guaranteed good RAM, about half the price of going
machines of similar. So it is a not wholly unreasonable thought
to buy a machine that already has either the RAM wanted or close
to it and thereby possess enough to deck out one machine with 1.5
and the other to sell with a respectable amount of RAM for many
purposes.

Yes *definitely* check RamSeeker.com first. I've purchased all of my
memory from one of the sites listed there (1.800.4.memory.com) for the
past 7 years and haven't ever gotten bad RAM from them.

Absolutely not. Macs use standard RAM chips like any PC. And Apple
sometimes has much higher prices than other vendors, especially in
terms of upgrades. Apple's BTO prices are pretty good as of late though.

How tough is it to install ram in a iMac PPC G5? Can a user do it?

You can judge the difficulty level for yourself - Apple provides
detailed instructions showing how to do it:

Excellent! Many thanks.
It says that the iMac's take a maximum of 2gig memory. Is there any
possibility that more memory will eventually but usable in these
computers? I have 1.5gig now and would be delighted to bump it to 3 or
4 if it were possible.

Absolutely. BUT. Make sure that you're getting good quality parts that
meet Apple's spec. At the very least, make sure that whomever you buy
from will replace any bad RAM without argument. The good retailers will.
OtherWorld Computing, as one example, sells good RAM.

Check your owner's manual; the procedure should be there, and it ought
to be dead simple.
If you don't have your book, you can download it from Apple's site.

Which iMac? G5 models?
The iMac G5 (iSight) supports up to 2.5GB
( http://support.apple.com/specs/imac/iMac_G5_iSight.html )
The iMac G5 (Ambient Light Sensor) and first iMac G5 supports up to 2GB.

Believe it or not, I've gotten bad RAM from Other World Computing more
than once in the past. In contrast, I've *never* gotten bad RAM from
1.800.4.memory.com in 7+ years.
I advise any Mac user looking for RAm to go first to
http://ramseeker.com to see current price comparisons of most popular
RAM vendors (Other World and 1.800.4.memory included).

I've never had any bad RAM from OWC, although I got one bad stick from
Kingston a couple years ago.

something...)

Definitely. Lots of people swear by OWC - so maybe my experience is
atypical. And I'm sure there are folks who have had occasion to get
bad RAM from 1.800.4.memory in the past as well.
