| A friend pointed out to me that the os x Mail application seems to offer the
choice for attachments to either send them as "windows friendly" or Mac
readable, but not both, unless you put extensions on the end. Are we reading
this correctly?

In general, "windows friendly" will also be "Mac readable" !

But according to the Help on Mac Mail, if you send attachments to Mac users
with the "windows friendly" option selected, then "your attachments may be
unusable or may be missing information."

If it's the type of file that would be usable by a Windows user, the
potential missing information is not important.
When you send "windows friendly" attachments, it only sends the data
fork, not both data and resource forks. In the case of files that can
be interchanged between Macs and Windows, the resource fork doesn't
contain any critical information.

You seem to be saying that what's missing doesn't affect Macs, but the
language of the Help screen says otherwise.

It only affects Macs if the file that is sent has a resource fork. Any
cross platform files are unlikely to be in that category.
In fact at least one of the Windows friendly encodings, Appledouble,
even sends both parts of a twin fork file ... so can be used seemlessly
with Macs and PCs ... just warn the PC users that if they see 2 files
when only expecting 1 it is just a redundant Mac resource fork which
they can trash.

I just tried sending the OS X Calculator application as a "Windows
friendly" email attachment using Mail (to myself). It came through
intact ... no resource fork problem. I therefore presume it is using
Appledouble, though this is not specifically stated.

The OS X Calculator doesn't have a resource fork.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Mac Mail attachments |
