Post subject: Mac OS 9.2.2 / WMP 7.1.2 - Problems to see video.
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsmedia>player>mac (more info?)

Dear Consultants:

I'm a Mac user since 1986.
G4, 500 Mhz dual OS 9.2.2
& G3 350 Mhz OS 8.6
Ethernet network
56K Lan Modem

WindowsMedia Player v. 7.1.2.1203
It seems to work perfectly until I intended to see my father's
everynight program transmission (he's a journalist, abroad). The
transmission can be heard without problem but not image is seen on screen.

The TV transmission technician there said that this is because I'm using
a Macintosh.
It's not a logical reason for me!
Maybe WMP version, maybe configuration in Preferences, perhaps any
plug-ing or something else...

Any suggestion?

I'll appreciate so much your help.
Thanks a lot in advance
Mariita

I suspect it simply is because the streaming uses a codec that's not
supported on WMP 7.1.2 :-\ and unfortunately, there is no way to add
codecs to this app.

Thank You very much Corentin.

So, what do you think I can do?

Upgrading to Panther and the latest version to WMP for Mac X?

I'm open to your suggestions.

Thanks again.

Maria

That might work. The latest version of Windows Media Player for OS X,
version 9, supports many codecs (such as the Windows Media 9 codecs) that
are not supported by the OS 8/9 version. However, it's not guaranteed to
work because even the OS X version cannot read files protected by the latest
Windows Media DRM tools.

And many codecs are still not supported on the MAc (especially third
party codecs like ACELP.net).

A candy question:

Codec is something that is part of the transmission, or format, or what?
;-)

Thanks Mickey...
Let me think what I'll do.
In the meantime, how can I know the codecs needed?
I can access people who are in charge of transmissions. Can I tell them
to change anything about it?
;-)

There is a list of the supported codecs on the MS web site, but it won;t
do you much good since ther is nothing you can do to add support for any
additional codec to WMP9 on MacOS X :-(

You can ask them t only use codecs that are supported in WMP 9 for
Mac... :-\

Codec stands for Coder-Decoder. You need a specific codec for each file
format. It's some kind of plug-in that allows the software to
"understand" the file formats it encounters.
