Post subject: Mac Pro 3.2GHz Ram Installation Video - Where?
Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>misc (more info?)

Not long ago I ran across an online video explaining the steps for
installing 8G of additional RAM in the new 3.2GHz Mac Pros. I ordered
the 3.2GHz (below) and will beef it up to 8Gigs. The video guide at
the OWC site is for last year's Mac Pro (3.0 GHz). I was sure the
newer video said the upper RAM Riser card was reversed resulting in
the cards facing each other. The current video shows the cards as
sliding in, one above the other.

I can't remember where I saw that first video. Does anyone know its
url location? I've searched DIGG and OWC without success. It is
always much easier to see how it is done rather then try and have
someone explain it to you. I know it isn't hard to do but doing it
right the first time is always nice.

While I'm here - the new machine comes with 2Gig of RAM in 1Gig
modules while the 8Gig I ordered from OWC comes in 2Gig per module - 4
modules in all. I know they have to be inserted in pairs or sets but
exactly where they should be placed has me searching for that
installation of RAM video. And I'm not sure if I can keep the
original 2Gig of RAM in the machine to equal a full 10Gig or not.
Does anyone know? I'm currently running the dual core 3.0GHz Mac Pro
with 4 internal TB of HD and and an external 2TB LaCie HD. I'll be
moving the HDs out of the old Mac Pro and into the new Mac Pro. What
I can't do is transfer the old RAM to the new Mac Pro and once I have
the new machine configured and my data migrated over I'll put the
3.0GHz w/8Gig up for sale on eBay. I have two 30" Apple Cinema HD
displays and a third external LaCie optical drive. I'll also transfer
over a wireless Mighty Mouse and the new aluminum keyboard. The
tethered mouse/keyboard arriving with the new Mac Pro will go with the
old Mac Pro at sale. Here's my new order:

AirPort Extreme card (Wi-Fi)
Two 16x SuperDrives
Two 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (8-core)
Apple Mighty Mouse
Apple Keyboard (English) + Mac OS X
2GB (2 x 1GB)
1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
Accessory kit
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB (Two dual-link DVI)

The machine should be delivered by March 1 and I suspect OWC will send
the RAM before then so I'd like to get a running start on how to
install the RAM and find out if I can keep the original 2G of RAM in
the machine along with the additional 8G.

Thanks for any help and advice. It is always appreciated.

Lewis and Dale - thanks for the advice. I did find the installation
video and have had some good advice from seasoned users such as
yourself. The video, should anyone want to see it, is here:
http://eshop.macsales.com/how_to_install/Apple/Mac_Pro_Memory_800Mhz_2008

What I've decided to do is go with a total of 8Gig and put in an order
with OWC for an additional 6Gigs (1GX6G) to fill all the slots. The
guys over at bearfeats.com say they have tested every possible
combination and "when all slots are occupied, the fastest memory
transfer rates were attained." For maximum throughput and optimal
interleaving, "you'll want to get 8 FB-DIMMs to fill all 8 slots."

My "older" machine is at the 3Ghz level with the ATI X1900 video
card. I've beefed it up to 8G which has been sufficient. If I find a
need to move up beyond 8Gig I'll replace the 1G modules with 2G
modules to climb to 16Gig. The new machine replaces that 3GHz with a
3.2GHz and the ATI card with a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB.

Can't tell you how much I appreciate the advice.

Just did the same, but with a 2.8 gig machine.

The instructions from OWC (where I bought mine - great company) are very
clear and deal with the scenario of installing 6 gig.

I've got 10 in mine, and they are arranged as...

top card
2 gig
2 gig
1 gig
1 gig

bottom card
2 gig
2 gig

and it all works fine. Installing the memory is very easy - just make
sure you have an anti static mat (i used a bag from a disc drive) and an
anti static wrist strap (although you can get away with grounding
yourself on the computer I prefer to be cautious).
