Does anyone know whether the MAC System Menu is about to undergo some
changes?

I have some developers telling me that it is
not advisable to develop anything for the system menu as Apple have warned
that it is going to change.

Not being a programmer, can someone let me know if this is correct & if
possible provide a reference?
If I go ahead with the system menu development, what is the likelihood that
any changes Apple make to it will be backwards compatible?

Many thanks in advance.

Stellar

Why not ask your developer friends to provide you some references?
They've apparently heard/read it from somewhere..... they should be able
to produce some kind of documentation

I have, but they are not forthcoming as yet. I am trying to get an
independent view of what others believe. Call me cynical, but I don't
always trust what one person tells me, I have a tendency not to believe
people unless it comes from several different sources or from a very
reliable source.

I would also like info on how seriously Apple take backwards compatibility

Thanks,

Stellar

Apple _generally_ takes backward compatibility fairly seriously, but
all bets are off if they've declared that something should not be
relied upon. There've been a few things dropped without warning, but
they had roughly 7 people using them.

I share Thom White's curiosity: What are you calling the "system menu?"

Are you talking about the Menu Extras? The API is hidden, so good luck
using it. Are you talking about OS X? Maybe thats why nobody understands
what you mean.

Also, you should call it "Mac" and not "MAC". The former is short for
"Macintosh" while the latter is an acronym meaning "Machine Address
Code".

What kind of software are you writing, what platforms are you targeting,
etc. etc.? Your post is highly ambiguous.
