I am new to Mac, and need some help on "how to's".

I want to import/capture video from my TV or Analog VCR into my Powerbook.

With my PC, I used a Dazzle 80. However, it does not seem to work on the Powerbook.

What are some inexpensive alternatives to accomplish this task?

Thanks

There are very few "inexpensive" analog to DV converters. You will need
one with FireWire. Don't bother with USB 2.0. Go with Firewire it is
well worth it.

I use an ADS Pyro which works great on my PowerBook and PowerMac.$275.00
U.S. with connections for Svideo, Sony iLink, Firewire, and composite
cables. I can import analog to DV and output DV to analog.

Good luck.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

If you have or are considering getting a DVcamcorder
and it has a firewire connection, the camera will act
as a converter

But watch out, some models will only function as a converter if you are
simultaneously recording onto the camera's internal one hour tape. (they
won't even pass through in record+pause mode.) It is almost impossible
to tell from the user's manual.

Best to try it (and just imagine explaining to the minimum wage sales
dude you need to hook a VCR and a Mac to the camera before you'll decide
to buy it.)

I've not been able to get a Canon ZR-10 to function as an analog to DV
converter except by simultaneously recording onto its internal tape.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Just because the firewire works through the camera does not mean you are
getting a quality conversion. I'd never trust my 850 horizontal line
betacam footage to be converted by a consumer camera.

I looked at the Pyro web site that Chey recommended and the Pyro A/V
link does convert anything to Mpeg2. The specs look good for consumer
use but for professional use I'd like to see a higher quality
conversion. I do like that it apparently is stand alone in that you can
convert if it is hooked up to your computer or not.

The Pyro A/V does mpeg, but I pump the converted video directly into
iMovie in the DV format that iMovie will only except. It will convert
any analog signal into whatever format you want.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

These are excellent, but not cheap;

I wonder if this would capture video from the Svideo port on my Sony
DVD-DCR300 Handycam, which, to my chagrin, isn't yet compatible with
OS X. If so, would it keep the 702x480 (or 720x480) video
resolution?

Yours,
