There is something wrong with the airport connection between these two
devices. I know it is between these two because my wife's PB works
fine. The MBP loses the connection and the only sure way to
re-establish it is to restart the MBP. Sometimes restarting the router
will work for a while, but in the end, I have to restart the MBP. At
somebody's suggestion I created an off-line "location" in order to reset
Airport, but that does not work any better than "Turn Airport Off."
Neither will re-establish the connection.

I am running 10.4.11 with the 2007-009 Security Update and the 2007-004
Airport Extreme Update installed. All other updates are for various apps
and not likely to be a factor. The 2008-001 Security Update is
available but not installed. Other than that I am up-to-date.

The PB does not use 'n', so the router on 'n' could be the problem.
However, I think if that were the case, restarting the router would
always solve the problem an it does not. Restarting the MBP does solve
the problem.

Is this a known issue? Has anybody else encountered it? Does anybody
have a suggested solution?

I found something in Apple's discussion forums about MPB machines losing
their connections, and I had the same problem myself. My new one was
bought in late November and never ran Tiger, as I immediately installed
Leopard.

At first, it was infrequent and only occurred after waking from sleep.
Sometimes, I could restore my connection and other times I had to
reboot. Then it became more and more frequent, often occurring while in
use or after logging off my account. Ultimately, the information I came
across via the discussion forums led me to what appears to have been the
solution for me: setting my router to B/G usage only.

My MBP is the only one in my home capable of using the draft N standard,
and info in the forums leads me to think that Apple's implementation in
the Airport Extreme card in my MBP may differ from Linksys'
implementation in my WRT150N. I still have an old PowerBook G4 (my wife
likes it and won't let me retire it) using B, and all other systems
using wireless support G. But since making this change in the router's
configuration, I have never once lost my wireless connection on the MBP.

Since I run Leopard, I'm seriously considering purchasing the new Time
Capsule in the near future. I've already adopted Time Machine for
backups, and this would give me a much larger backup drive along with
being able to stop connecting my current one via FireWire cable when I'm
not mobile. Added to that would be the fact that my new router would
then be an Apple product, ensuring that my issue no longer occurred.

Thanks. I should give that a try. Since the PB seems always to work,
that could be the solution. Unfortunately, I went with 'n' for the
increased range, and I will have to see what the trade-offs are.

Range seems to be fine so far.
