MacBook and Xerox WorkCentre XD100

I know it's an old printer, but I like it, and I just bought a USB
cable for it. My MacBook won't recognize it, and it's not listed on
the Printer Model list of the Printer Setup Utility. I tried
selecting Generic, and tried a number of HP LaserJet Gimp-Print v5.0.0
beta. It would say Gimp-Print printing page 1, 34%, and then would
say printer not responding. Any suggestions?
