The tech specs say battery life is only 5 hours -- a disappointment
from the rumors. I couldn't find any mention of whether having the SS
drive helps with that.

The fee is a little more than I expected, but I wasn't expecting this to
be free. I can't get into the store fast enough. :) >> Stay informed about: MacWorld Expo keynote |

I'm so glad I held off on replacing my 802.11g Airport Extreme (which
has worked like a champ btw). Time Capsule will definitely make my life
a whole lot easier with three computers to maintain & back-up. Time
Capsule also has a USB port for either a printer or another HD.

One of these days, my old Sony Ericsson cell phone will die and I can
finally get an iPhone. It looks like the iPod touch does just about
everything short of baking bread and phoning. My SIL just loves hers.

I can see that I won't be replacing my G4 as soon as I thought, what
with getting Time Capsule and Apple TV.

Boy, Andy Ihnatko sure hit the nail on the head for this one, including
the price. I don't recall anyone predicting that large, multi-
functional touch-pad though. What a beautiful piece of technology. >> Stay informed about: MacWorld Expo keynote |

Gosh, I sure hope not. What a disaster that'd be.

That, by itself, isn't a deal breaker for me. Combined with all of the
other limitations, it's definitely a deal breaker for me, but then I'm
what I would consider a "pro user". If disassembling the case and
replacing the battery is particularly difficult, then *that* may be a
deal breaker for me. Time will tell.

Rats. I jumped when the Gigabit model of the 802.11n Airport Extreme was
available. I don't have a hard drive for it yet but probably will at
some point. Time Capsule is a much better option given you save the cost
of a drive enclosure and probably get better performance.
Two big questions (which we won't know until we see the thing):
1. How easy is it to swap the hard drive? Knowing Apple, probably hard.
2. Does it perform better than a USB 2.0 hard drive connected to an
Airport Extreme? (Tested via Gigabit Ethernet.)
I note that it is a litle larger than the Airport Extreme: 5 mm taller,
and the footprint is the same as the Apple TV.
Delayed introduction might be partly to allow time for 10.5.2 to be
available - it will almost certainly be required to officially support
backing up to Time Capsule (and I expect it will also support Airport
Extreme backups).

That 64GB solid state disk option is not exactly cheap. Adds US$999 as a
build option, and the faster base configuration which includes it is
US$3098, which is the most expensive base price for any current Apple
laptop.
Still, a very appealing computer for those who want the lighter weight
and smaller size.
The solid state drives will get larger and cheaper, but Apple's pricing
is likely to remain unchanged until the next model refresh.

Indeed. No MacBook Pro or iMac updates - probably show up within two
months, once the new Penryn series CPUs are available in quantity. (I
thought the MacBook Pro was a moderate possibility, but it would be too
soon for an iMac.)
A Mac Mini update is likely no later than the iMac, and could be sooner
as it would use a CPU which is already widely available.

I was thinking just the opposite: it has a relatively puny 37 W/hr battery,
so 5 hours usage means the MacBook Air consumes <8 Watts! Amazingly
frugal, if true. My Asus Eee PC uses ~9 W, and it has a smaller display, less
RAM, slower CPU, and I don't use wireless.
I wonder how easy it is to replace the HDD; I'm awfully tempted to buy the
standard model and replace the ATA disk with a ATA-compatible 32 GB
Flash disk instead of paying a premium for the 64 GB option. >> Stay informed about: MacWorld Expo keynote |
