Hello everyone,
I have a rather odd question. I am running a Macbook Pro. While I am
very fond of my Macbook, I am not however very fond of the loud start
up sound. I am in a college dorm and when I start my machine up in
the morning before class, the start up sound wakes my roommate up just
about every time. Sometimes (when I remember) if I turn down the
volume before shutting down, it is not as loud when starting up. I
used to own a Powerbook and I know that when headphones were plugged
in it would disable the speakers. Is there anything I can do to
eliminate or at least significantly quiet the machine during startup?
If so, I (and my roommate) would be very appreciative! Thanks

Hmm.
What about just not turning it off? I mean I put my Macbook to sleep
when I'm not using it (by the very simple step of shutting the lid).
Then when I want to use it, I open the lid. No noises on startup or
shutdown since I don't start it up or shut it down. >> Stay informed about: Macbook start up sound |

Barbarossa:
Yes, there is a Pref that allows you to adjust the volume of
the start-up sound:
<http://www5e.biglobe.ne.jp/~arcana/StartupSound/index.en.html>
<http://www5e.biglobe.ne.jp/~arcana/software.en.html>
I use it on my G5 w/ 10.4.11; however, there is no indication
how it works with 10.5.x, but it's free and you could give it a
try:

Before you shut down press the F3 mute key, no sound when you startup. >> Stay informed about: Macbook start up sound |

The Macbook is different. The start-up chime will always come out of
its speakers, even when headphones are plugged in. This just came up
on Apple's core audio mailing list... So, you'll need to find another
way to turn it off (which was probably already given in the other
followups to you).

I'm running on a MacBook Pro using OS X 10.5.2, and if I turn off the sound
before shutting down there will be no bonggggg upon startup.

Don't shut your MacBook down. The only time a MacBook needs to be shut
down is when removing the battery. If you don't need to do that, just
put it to sleep by closing the lid. Waking from sleep produces no loud
chime.
