that's totally false. there's an issue with the firewire chip in the
new imacs which can cause a problem with some older ipods as well as
other firewire devices. it has nothing to do with apple dropping
support for ipods. they fully support *all* ipods.

How do I update the playlists on the old iPod without an old iMac?

That is not encouraging. My old iPod will likely never be able
to be iTunes attached to the new iMac.

I was hoping the problem might be fixed at some time.

you update it by attaching it to the computer. the issue with the
latest imacs is some sort of firewire incompatiblity. it's not
intentional and i've only heard of it happening on the imacs, and only
sometimes. other macs should work fine.

True. Only limited support is available for my 17 year old Mac Classic II
running System 7.5.

False. There are still a lot of Apple II's around and working just fine. My
IIgs system sold almost immediately some months ago to one of several people
anxious to buy it.

I assume you mean where you are located because there are a number of caring
persons in this newsgroup.

There is a thriving but small market for old computers. Apple
products are generally well built and physically they should
work for many years.

However, with the current pace of change in the IT industry
(Internet, web applications, interfaces, chip designs, standards,
wireless technologies, operating systems, graphics, the move to
mobile devices etc) I think it is crazy to try to design a machine
with anything more than about a three year "support life". I am not
saying I am happy with the situation as it is clearly wasteful
of resources - but things move on. Why does AppleCare last
only three years? It is because Apple assumes that the vast
majority of people who can afford to buy a new Mac now will
not want to keep using what is effectively an obsolete product
in three years time. I certainly don't expect my iMac to be
fully supported and compatible with all new technology when it
is three years old, and I will pass it on to someone who is
prepared to accept its inevitable limitations.

A rumor site is reporting that iMacs could be updated next Tuesday (4
March):

Penryn iMacs Next Tuesday?

"MacNotes.de received unconfirmed word that new Penryn based iMacs
would be seen next Tuesday, continuing Apple's pattern of weekly
announcements since Macworld.

"There's been no independant confirmation of such an announcement, but
would be consistent with rumors that Apple is transitioning their Merom
processor based Macs over to Penryn due to a planned phase out of Merom
processors in the coming months."

No Blu-Ray, either.

Following up on the remote control filament...

Since Apple isn't giving its remote away anymore, is there a 3rd party
remote which will work to control the CPU or an iPod? Perhaps any
'learning' remote? Any 'current readers' have any experience with a
particular model. Does it require software?

Thanks,

AFAIK, slot-loading Blu-ray drives are not yet available. Prices are
coming down, though. PriceGrabber lists a Pioneer combo (reads BDs,
burns DVDs) at $150.

Ah, thanks for the clarification, Michelle.
