As mentioned below, there was some buzz that iMacs might be bumped up
today (March 3). But nothing happened. Oh well.

iMac and Mac Mini are the only two models not updated yet and should be
viewed as "due anytime".

However, "Limited Time Special Price" sale at Apple's refurbished store
suggests they have a lot of "aluminum" inventory to push out. There may
be no announcement until these stocks are depleted.

Of course I a only guessing and could be anywhere between on target and
way off.

Another Tuesday and still no new iMacs or Mini. :)

Looks like we have to wait for the overstock inventory to clear out in
the "refurbished" store.

Or I may break down and buy a current one now. After all, we are not
expecting any real breakthrough and newer models are always there just
around the corner. So I might buy one now and use it until they bring
out something really different, eg with blu-ray dvd.

So what *are* we expecting for the new iMac when it eventually appears?
I understand that the latest laptops are using the new Penryn processors
even though the rest of the Penryn chipset is not available. Perhaps
they are waiting for that? But on the laptops Penryn hardly boosted the
speed at all - reduced power consumption was the main benefit, which is
obviously not as important on a desktop.

What about LED backligting? And when do people expect to see the first
Mac shipping with Blu-ray?

I got my iMac back in October 2006 and the only problem I have had is
with the mouse. I got the same problem mentioned in a recent thread
where the roller ball stops working in one direction. At first I managed
to free it up but now it seems permanently stuck and I have just got
used to doing without it. Apart from that I can't really think of any
way in which my iMac could be improved - it is just too good as it is!
Anyway, I won't be looking to replace it until at least after AppleCare
has expired in October 2009.

Ian

Speed bump, bigger drive. Maybe more RAM.

Could be made even thinner and less bulky.

But I agree that there are always newer tweaks around the corner, so we
should simply buy something when we need to use it.

One of the things I really like about my old "desklamp" G4 iMac over
the new models (G5 and Intel "all-screen" formfactor) is that the G4
had a horizontally-mounted, tray-loading optical drive. I would love to
see models that eschewed the aesthetically-pleasing but
function-impaired slotloaders, especially the not-quite-vertical ones
(way more susceptible to vibration/errors).

Other "wish-list" items: dual FW400 + a FW800 to go with the three USB2
ports (currently only one FW400)...more RAM/disk capacity.
