There are apps (even freeware, I think) out there that allow you to make a
bootable backup. But, I think just installing OS X on your Firewire drive
is the best option. I just bought an EZQuest 250 GB Firewire drive and have
been using it as both a backup drive and a bootable emergency drive. Before
I installed OS X, I partitioned the drive using Disk Utility into two
volumes: One very large (and unformatted) for storing backups, and the other
much smaller (30 or so GB) for use as an emergency disk containing
DiskWarrior, Disk Utility, TechTool Pro, Applejack and Onyx so I can use it
to fix any potential problems with my iMac's regular startup disk. I
separated the two volumes because sometimes using your OS X-formatted
emergency volume for backups can cause problems. For backing up my iMac
drive I use either the freeware app iBackup or the shareware app Synk (which
offers an educational license for students for a minimum of $1). If you
have any questions about how to set this up, don't hesitate to email me
directly by using the Reply to Sender button instead of Reply to Newsgroup.
