I've forgotten Panther's "master password" for FileVault. But I'm not
actually using FileVault yet. Is there any way to reset it?

I recall on the Master Password panel it saying "WARNING: Your files
will be encrypted using your login password. If you forget your login
password and the master password is not available, your data will be
lost forever."

My guess is that it's not recoverable. At best, you might be able to
delete the preference file that holds the password. But then, if it
were that easy to disable, what would be the use of it?

You can take the file off and it's not influencing the security in any
negative way. Quite the opposite. If you remove the master password -
you remove a secondary (backdoor) access to your encrypted files. Thus
you make your files even more secure. Don't you? And also another yes -
removing this file will reset the master password to a "not-set" stage.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I don't have any encrypted files on this machine, so deleting it and
resetting the system to no master password is exactly what I want. Any ideas
what file it's in?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Nevermind; once I stopped looking for "master" and started looking for
"fault" it was easy to find them: FileVaultMaster.cer and
FileVaultMaster.keychain.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
