It's a bit beyond that.
<http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/support/topic_legal_notices.html>
PDf is an Open Standard.
"Accordingly, the following patents are licensed on a royalty-free,
nonexclusive basis for the term of each patent and for the sole purpose
of developing software that produces, consumes, and interprets PDF files
that are compliant with the Specification:"
So, Adobe is not relinquishing th patents, but is surrendering all
rights to then for anything having to do with compliant PDF tools.
Basically, there might be some other applications for these patents, and
Adobe is preserving their rights to these patents for other uses. But
PDF is free and clear and will be for the entire life of the patents in
question.
Adobe owns the patents. It is perfectly accurate to say that no one 'owns'
PDF any more.
