Hi

If you create a new word document i assume it writes the 'owner' of
the application into the document. Same with creating an image in
Photoshop.

I would imagine this is limited to the serial number of the
application + the company name + user name entered at the time the app
was installed.

When sending out docs for people to read in business is the standard
now to use PDF? is that now the universally accepted standard? Or does
Adobe own that ? (Apple's preview handles PDFs without licencing it
from Adobe, rite?)

I know some people advocate 'openoffice' but I don't have it on my mac
since I use office 2008 (I am not poor Pages doesn't really cut the
mustard when using track changes & exchanging dox with business
people)

Also, when you take pix on your camera/fone did u know it writes EXIF
data into the files? You can use irfanview to remove this on the PC
(there are also utils on the Mac that can do this)

People should be careful what they send out.

have a nice day,

London.

you can set the owner name in word's preferences. photoshop doesn't
write the owner name at all.

adobe no longer owns pdf; it's an international standard.

there's nothing identifying about exif data unless the user
deliberately configured the camera to write their name or other info.
otherwise, exif data just contains camera settings, raw conversion
settings and other attributes of the photo.

or what they post.

nope. as of june, 2007, it's maintained and controlled by the iso
(tc171/sc2) and as of january, 2008, iso 32000 (iso pdf) is a ratified
international standard. the publication is due in april (i.e. any day
now).

It's a bit beyond that.

<http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/support/topic_legal_notices.html>

PDf is an Open Standard.

"Accordingly, the following patents are licensed on a royalty-free,
nonexclusive basis for the term of each patent and for the sole purpose
of developing software that produces, consumes, and interprets PDF files
that are compliant with the Specification:"

So, Adobe is not relinquishing th patents, but is surrendering all
rights to then for anything having to do with compliant PDF tools.

Basically, there might be some other applications for these patents, and
Adobe is preserving their rights to these patents for other uses. But
PDF is free and clear and will be for the entire life of the patents in
question.

Adobe owns the patents. It is perfectly accurate to say that no one 'owns'
PDF any more.
