Well here are my two cents. I make no claims to being an honest person,
so comments regarding my moral standing can be left on your desktop.
First of all, I STEAL from microsoft every chance I get. They have
stolen from the Mac community from day one and they continue to do so.
They live on the inovation of Apple. Anyone who wants to deny that can
suck my left toe.
Derek, If you want to go the honest route, Open Office is a great
alternative and for the most part will serve all of your general needs.
If you wnat to go the less honest route, I would encourage you to check
out the Bit torrent community. The Bit torrent file sharing system is
fast and easy to use and you can find much better more reliable
downloads of software, movies. It also has the advantage of being a
distributed file sharing system, meaning you will be downloading from
sometimes hundreds of users at rates much faster than the Gnutella
system (Limewire).
Here is the specification for the bit torrent Protocol:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://wiki.theory.org/index.php/BitTorrentSpecification" target="_blank">http://wiki.theory.org/index.php/BitTorrentSpecification</a>
Basically it works like this:
1) DOWNLOAD A BIT TORRENT APP - I use Azureus, which can be found at
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://azureus.sourceforge.net/" target="_blank">http://azureus.sourceforge.net/</a>
2) Visit one of the sites below to find "torrents" for the files you are
looking for. Once you have found the torrent, download it and load it
into Azureus and viola, you have the software.
One thing to always remember is to keep your download open after it is
finished as long as you possibly can so that others can share in the
wealth. This is called seeding, if you do not seed enough once you have
the software, many sites will ban you from downloading until you have
shared at least twice what you have downloaded, this insures that the
torrent system stays alive.
You can find much of what you may need in the way of software for the PC
and other stuff at <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.supernova.org" target="_blank">http://www.supernova.org</a> or <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.torrentz.com/" target="_blank">http://www.torrentz.com/</a>
There is a Mac specific torrent site, which is very good that is
undergoing a change in server and will be back up soon. I will post the
link later when the site is back up. For now, visit the site
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://forums.torrentskickass.com" target="_blank">http://forums.torrentskickass.com</a> for info on torrenting.
Hope this helps, and to those who don't like. Kiss my ass.
