Hello All,

I have what I think is an unusual problem, and it has me stumped.

My intel core 2 duo iMac has the stock, wired mighty mouse attached. It
is the one that comes in the box with the iMac. On occasion, the scroll
function will cease to work in one direction. This may last for a
couple of days and then mysteriously disappear. When it occurs, it
always scrolls up but never down.

No amount of fiddling in the control panel will resurrect it. I took
and old usb "pilot mouse - optical" that I had in the drawer and hooked
it up. All seemed to return to normal. I reattached the apple mouse,
and the scrolling problem was still there. Normally this situation
exists for a few days and then disappears. This time it is lasting
weeks.

I have searched Apple's support site for all things mouse and can't
find any obvious help. No new drivers, updates, etc. I even tried
starting up in "safe mode". It made no difference.

I am open to suggestions.

It is an iMac intel core 2 duo with OS X 10.4.11 installed.

Thanks in advance.

A very common problem. It probably needs cleaning. I normally press down
very hard on the ball itself, and roll it backwards and forwards and sideways
a few times. That always works with me. You will find other suggestions
(including taking it apart and re-gluing it) on a search for *cleaning mighty
mouse*.

Sally,

Thank you for the lead to the tips on "cleaning the mighty mouse". I
tried just pressing real hard and rolling it in all directions, but
that didn't seem to work.

One of the tips was to take it apart, which I was reluctant to do. But
one said to wipe the roller ball real well with a lint free cloth and
some rubbing alcohol. After a good rubdown with the isopropyl alcohol
all was well.

Again, Thanks!
