I am having trouble getting music from my laptop to a mini iPod. The
story is that this was my daughter's iPod. She upgraded, and dear old
Dad took over the mini. I have a library of music in iTunes on my 1GHz
PowerBook, so I proceeded to "bless" the mini iPod to the PowerBook and
transfer the music. The mini iPod is the 4GB model, and is running
software version 1.4.1, which I understand is the latest.
About 1.1GB into the transfer, I got the message "Attempting to copy to
the disk "XXXX iPod" failed. Disk could not be read or written to." I
started to look around. I made sure all my music files were consolidated
into the iTunes music library and tried again. Same result. I restored
the iPod to its factory settings - same result.
Then I read that the mini iPod required USB 2, rather than the USB 1.1
on the PowerBook. OK, so I got a FireWire cable which I thought would
eliminate that problem. Same result.
On the iPod I now have playlists that have no songs in them, even though
the same playlist in iTunes does. I have been able since this began to
write my Contacts over to the iPod, so I assume it is not just a failure
of the iPod's disk, but has to do with how iTunes and the iPod
communicate.
I have browsed Apple's site and elsewhere, but to no avail. Can anyone
offer advice based on a similar experience?

I get a feeling the disk may be a bit under the weather. It may be that
a real reformat of the drive might do it good.

That was my feeling, but I am able to set it up as a disk drive, and
write to it and read PowerPoint and PDFs just fine. It makes me think
that the problem is between iTunes and the iPod.

It may be a real disk issue but it might simply be a corrupt music
track. I suggest you set the iPod for manual music management and
transfer a few tracks. If that goes OK try some more ...
The iPod also has its own built in hard drive checking routine which can
be accessed through special key press combinations (I'll look it up if
you eventually require this).

OK, I think I have solved the problem. I took your good advice and
switched to managing the music manually. I then copied each playlist
over to the iPod (nothing like as lengthy as you might think), and lo
and behold, I found two tracks on one album that would not copy (even
though iTunes played them just fine), and gave me the error message. If
I skipped past those, everything else was fine.
What puzzles me, though, is why the iPod/iTunes software is so touchy,
and that it could not just go past the bad tracks, and complete the
sync? All the songs that did not copy over originally were apparently
stopped by this one bad track. That seems like pretty feeble software to
me.
Anyway, many thanks for the suggestions and help. I think this is what
the UseNet is really useful for!

Well, if my Mac were behaving like this, I just might wipe it, nd
reinstall a freash OS from scratch. If it works 99,9% of the time, and
then suddenly stops... then someting is wrong. In your case, it is even
reproducible. Worth a try to wipe it, is my simple point. Very little to
lose, as your iPod won't be updated now anyway, right?

It does seem strange behaviour, but it has been reported from time to
time before, so I'm glad I made the suggestion... and that it solved
your problem.
I speculate that it might be somehow related to the DRM aspect of file
management. Perhaps a corrupt file leads to the iPod thinking that the
file is a tampered-with protected track (even if it never started out as
a protected track in the first place).
