Post subject: Mozyhome or JungleDisk and S3 with Apple's Backup (or another backup program)?
Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>apps, others (more info?)

Anyone tried either of those? Any other solutions? Opinions? Pros and
cons? Is Apple's Backup app up to the task if I go with JungleDisk and
S3? Or what app did you use instead? How does JungleDisk work exactly?
What sort of drive appears? Limitations?

In case anyone else wonders - Mozy <http://mozy.com/home> is backup with
online storage included, and JungleDisk <http://www.jungledisk.com/> is
a way to have Amazon's S3 online storage service appear on the desktop
as a drive.

Your help is REALLY appreciated as I'm in dire need of a decent online
backup strategy for a new Mac that will be storing some very important
data. I'm already using Time Machine with an external HD, but of course
that does no good if the house burns down.

TIA,

I've used Mozy for several months now. It is still beta on the Mac. I
had a couple of problems with it getting confused, but got it
straightened out both times. Customer support via email is pretty good
-- they have always responded within 24 hours, and seem appreciative of
suggestions for improvements.

I have 103,571 files taking 203.1 GB backed up right now (I have the
status window open in a corner). The initial backup took several
months, doing about 2GB per day. It now keeps it backed up daily.

I have it configured to back up every morning at 3AM (I go to bed around
2AM), which I find is better than the default of whenever it thinks you
are not using the system. Last night it backed up 176 files (according
to that same status window).

I have it store all my music, photos, and documents folder. I have
tested with a small recovery of a few files just to see how it works,
and it works fine. Faster recovery than storage (about 6GB per day
download while 2GB upload).

I wouldn't want to use this for something critical that I needed quickly
to get back and running, but it is fine for things like music and photos
that you would want to recover, but can survive if it takes a few days
(or weeks..) to download it all.

I've been experimenting with Mozy using the free 2GB for some of
critical files in my home folder. It has been working fine.

I'm told if you have to recover huge amounts you can request they
send you CDs of your data.

I have been using Mozy (2GB/month free) successfully (well, if you count
success as not needing to use it, but putting files up there) for quite
some time. They've had some issues, but they do keep plugging away and
improving the software.

I do have important data from two different Macs being backed up on Mozy
and I haven't noticed any issues.
