Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>printing (more info?)

I am about to conclude that there is no way to network USB/FireWire printers
except to use a computer dedicated as a print server.

Panther broke support for the Ethernet card in my Epson 900N, and Epson has
declared that it's too old to bother rewriting network drivers.

I just bought a new Epson R-800, which, Epson informs me, is not
networkable--no way, no how. Furthermore, no Axis print servers will work
with their printers anymore (Axis concurs), and Epson offers only 2 products
with built-in network cards.

USB print sharing in OS X is close to useless, because when the hosting
machine goes to sleep, so does printing.

Am I right that there is no 3rd party device that will put a USB/FireWire
printer onto Ethernet?
