I'm wondering if anybody has any insight on this (ie.what am I doing
wrong).

I've installed the Nikon Capture software on my DualG5 and it works
well. However when editing/manipulating pictures and in particular
modifying the shadown adjustement, the little progress bar pops up and
it takes approximately 8-10s worth of processing on the picture to get
a result.

I've also installed the Nikon Capture software on my AMD machine
(Athlon XP 3100+). The same modifications to the pics are done almost
instantenously.

Anybody out there have this software package running on a Mac that has
figured out why the delay?

Ok, I guess I'll give it a shot. Although, the Nikon people (who were
obviously shilling their product as well) seem to think that Photoshop
RAW importing capabilities are tuned for the lowest commond denominator
(that is, make sure that it can read all RAW formats) and may or may
not detect all the Nikon specific features in the RAW file.

Sounds like you use it often enough to be considered an expert :)

Nikon make great hardware but they are quite hopeless at software. I,
too, have Nikon Capture on a G5 dual. but I never use it because I
think it stinks.

Photoshop has the best RAW importing facilities in my opinion.
MacBibble is a distant second.

Now, i don't claim to be an expert. but I use the combination of Nikon
D2X, G5 dual, OS X 10.41 and Photoshop every day, 12/7/365.

I look forward to alternative opinions.

I agree. I have a D70 and I think Photoshop blows Nikon Capture out of
the water.

Anything Nikon made for the Mac in terms of s/w blows. Go to
dpreview.com, a better place to ask these kind of questions.
Canon OTOH has the mac in mind when making s/w.
Better try C1 or PS CS2.

The Nikon software is pretty lame. Don't bother with trying to make it
work. Apple's iPhoto is nearly as good and Photoshop (either elements or CS)
is much better for image editing.

I've got the Canon software. They may have had the mac in mind, but
clearly hadn't actually used one before releasing their software.
Several of their packages go through a two stage process where a
launcher application loads first then 'allows' you to launch the
application you actually wanted. Of course attempting to launch the
application directly simply puts up an error box with "You can't launch
this application directly." How bad could the Nikon be?

I can't help but feel that you are confusing Nikon Picture Perfect with
Nikon Capture.

Hmmm, why do you say that?

One factor is that they have a strong tendency towards Wizards... For
example, their CameraWindow.app is a launcher for 4 apps in a
sub-directory of the CameraWindow directory. The main interface for
Camera window shows a tabbed window, with tabs labeled Acquire Images,
Set to Camera and Remote shooting. Outside of the tab, and at the bottom
of the window are two buttons, Preferences and Quit.
Being outside the tabs, these buttons are always visible, however, the
preferences button is only enabled when the 'Acquire Images' tab is
selected. Selecting preferences launches a chain of four dialogs of
preferences. When any other tab is frontmost that button is disabled.

Basically, the design of the application is very Windows-centric.

Beyond the CameraWindow, which will launch ImageBrowser, and
ImageBrowser which will launch the bundled ArcSoft PhotoStudio, or
Canon's MyCamera App, there is also an explicit PhotoStitchLauncher.app.

PhotoStitch launcher is a weaker example, as you can choose to launch
PhotoStitch directly, but attempting to launch MyCamera, or any other
apps in the CWUtility directory results in an error dialog (home grown,
rather than system error).

I don't know what Picture Perfect is, so I cannot be sure. I was talking
about all the Nikon software

I have installed (and removed) Nikon Capture on my Mac OS X system. The
remote control function doesn't work with my D70. The other four functions
in Nikon Capture (transfer, browse, view and edit) are clumsy and limited
compared to the combination of iPhoto and Photoshop. I use iPhoto to
transfer, organize and print and switch to Photoshop for any serious editing
or when I want to deal with raw format images.
