I just got my iMac desktop a couple of weeks ago and have been having a
problem with Numbers. When I try to open a 20MB Excel file it huffs
and puffs for a long while then tell me the file is too large to open.
HEY, I got 4 GBs of memory and a 750 Gig drive! As a test I cut the
file down to 16 meg which Numbers will open but it takes forever to do
so. Navigating in the file is a hopeless proposition. I get faster
results on a Toshiba Tecra 8000 with 128 megs of memory.

Can I look forward to better results with Open Office?

I'll tell you, I _want_ to like and use Numbers, I really do, but I've
found it's next to useless for me, for several reasons. It choked on
some of my Excel documents, too, and it doesn't support split screens or
exporting as tab-delimited text.

Well, you probably want to try NeoOffice first, since it runs directly
in Mac OS X and doesn't require X11, and since it's a free download it's
definitely worth your while to try it out.

Second that, but for what it's worth the latest developer snapshots of
OpenOffice 3 (the version of OpenOffice that will finally have a native
Aqua interface) have proven surprisingly stable in my usage, and I like
its font rendering better than NeoOffice's...

Another data point: Same here. Numbers is no replacement for Excel. It's
not even a decent replacement for AppleWorks. I realize how much demand
there was for a spreadsheet program to fill out the iWork suite, but
sorry to say, Numbers was released long before it was ready for prime-time.

Most all of my spreadsheet files use Visual Basic.

Sure VB is dangerous - because it is powerful. But sometimes I need
power.
