Are there any decent freeware or shareware
programs for OS X that can go from image file
to text?

Or that can be a plug-in for GraphicConverter?

The one I used to have only works in OS 9, and
my Classic broke when I got 10.3.5

I've not found anything that's free or shareware for MacOS X. There's
probably professional packages out there if this is worth it to you.

I use OmniPage Ltd on MacOS 9 when I need to do this sort thing. It's
the only reason I boot into MacOS 9.

It's what I had. But I can't do OS 9 any more.
And can't afford to buy anything.

I have no suggestions, and no need of this currently. I may, however, need
this in the future. If you find something you like independent of the
group, would you mind posting to this thread?

"gocr" (which you would have to compile yourself) is pretty much
alpha stage, so I cannot recommend it...

We bought a HP PSC 1100 pr/sc/cop not long ago (EUR 88,-), and
bundled with it came an OEM version of ReadIris Pro 7.0.4! Maybe
that's an alternative for your as well. If it is, say Hello to
ReadIris's support, it works in Panther, you just have to give the
user in question read, write, execute access to ReadIris.app to get
around error -5000 on startup.
