I stumbled across a few excel files that whenever I try to
open them, I get the message "Cannot open normal document
created in Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh version 1.X."

How can I open these files?

Toodles!

Basically, the only solution seems to be to find an
earlier version with the ability to open 1.x files.
The most recent answer you can find concerning this issue,
is to be found in Jim Gordon's reply to message

To read Jim's reply, run a "Goups" search for it in Google.

You could also make an attempt with icExcel:

I couldn't tell if it works, but there's a free trial
period...
