My PB 5300cs refuses to reboot anytime I switch batteries, until I plug in
the AC adapter. Then it automatically reboots, before I hit the power key.
After that it runs off of the battery just fine (until it runs down and I
have to switch again.) Any ideas what could cause this? PRAM corruption?
Dead PRAM battery? (It won't properly reset the PRAM either, or at least it
seems that way.)

I'm beginning to think I need a new PowerBook. I've had a multitude of
problems with this one.

Many thanks in advance.

There is a power manager reset button somewhere on the back of the 5300.
Try pushing it and see if that solves your problem. Take a look in the manual
for info on this button.

Hey Ron, thanks for the reply.

I have tried pushing (and holding) the only button on the back, but it
hasn't helped. I thought that was an "interrupt" switch. Before I had a
properly working keyboard I used that to make it reboot after shutting down.

Anyone else have any ideas?

BTW, when you reset the PRAM isn't it supposed to chime three times? Mine
hangs after the second chime.

Thanks all...

I'm pretty sure that's a dead PRAM battery.

Sounds like the onboard CUDA (power management chip) is lost -- an
unfortunate but common occurence with most early Powerbooks. You'll need
to re-set it, and the actual reset approach varies slightly from model
to model. This approach seems to work with most PowerBooks.

Remove all battery packs, unplug the AC adaptor. Hold down all modifier
keys on the keyboard (Cmd, Shift, Option and Control), hold down the
Delete key, then press and hold the rear reset button for ten seconds.
Plug in just the AC adaptor, then press the power-on key and let the
machine boot normally. Shut down, then insert the battery pack and
reboot. This will remedy 95% of all pre-G4 PowerBooks' power management
issues.

Well, now I lost my video. Could that also be a dead PRAM battery? (I
replaced it less than 6 months ago...)

Thanks,

Thanks. I'll try this. I have a motherboard on order, just in case. Could
a loss of video be a dead PRAM battery?

Have you done a reset on the power manager? Search Apple's site for
instructions, it's different from model to model.

Well, that seemed to take care of the reboot problem (so far... sometimes
it lies to me.) But I still have no video, which it seems like someone told
me some months back was probably a dead PRAM battery. What do you think
about that idea?

Any extra help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Geoffrey told me how to reset my power manager, and that seemed to help with
the reboot/battery problem. Last night Iost my video, however, and that is
still gone. Could this be a dead PRAM battery?

Just thought of one more thing. A day or two ago my AC adapter came
unplugged, and killed the regular battery when it ran out. Could that have
killed my PRAM battery too?

Thanks again,

Highly unlikely, at least in a PowerBook. (In older Macs, if the PRAM
battery was dead, the machine would chime on power-up but display no
video).

Does video work if you use an external monitor?

Not really. It could be PRAM-associated, but I highly doubt it. Can you
get close to the screen and see whether it is actually drawing the image
without a backlight? Have you tried fiddling with the backlight and
contrast levels?
