Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>system (more info?)

I cannot seem to get Pages to conform to my modest needs.

It seems that there is no way to assign attributes to an entire
document. Whenever 'return' is hit the new ¶ reverts to the default font
of Pages.
Also, when setting line space to "single" it is not a single space, at
least not by any standards I've ever used or seen. In fact it is at
least double space if not more. I get close by not using the menu and
adjusting the slide to about .4, that seems as close to a single space
as I can get.

I am reading the User's Guide, but to no avail on these problems.

Help, please.

Michael

Yes I found it, or at least many comments.

Unfortunately no one seems to be down at my level of confusion. All I
wanted was to be able to get away from Word. But, $%^&**(^ Word seems to
do all, most of the time when it is not bugging out.

Thanks,

When setting up paragraph styles, you can choose the 'Following
Paragraph Style'. Do this from the 'More' tab in the Text inspector.

Huh? I don't see anything like that here. Here's what single-space looks
like in Word vs. Pages:

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://66.114.68.129/files/pages.gif" target="_blank">http://66.114.68.129/files/pages.gif</a>

The only difference I notice is that Pages has nicer font rendering.

A line height of 0.4 actually results in overlapping text. What font are
you using? The font defines what constitutes normal line spacing.

You have to edit the body paragraph style.
To do that, select the text font by hitting command-T and editing it
there, and setting paragraph attributes by hitting command-option-I for
the Inspector, then select the T tab and set spacing etc.
When you have done that, in the styles drawer (shift-command-T) the
triangle next to the body paragraph (assuming it was one) will turn red
to indicate you have changes. From the menu from clicking on the red
triangle select redefine style from selection.

Use from the Inspector>Text>Spacing>Line double arrow next to Single:
At Least to enter exact point value.

Yes, I think that is what I've been doing. But when you go to a new ¶
one must once again go to ¶ and reset for the new ¶.

My question is that going to "single" give not a single space, but
rather a spacing that is nearer to double space.
Am I making myself clear? I fear not.

That might be because Word's support for kerning appears to be sketchy
at best. I'm not a Word user but have seen cases where obviously no
kerning was applied when using PS fonts

Perhaps Word turns on kerning only above a certain font size for better
screen readability?!

It's delighting and not entirely surprising to see that Pages gets that
aspect right.

In fact, it would be pretty surprising if it *didn't* get this right,
because it probably just uses the Cocoa text system, which is very good
at this sort of thing.

You could always take a whole new approach and use LyX (http://www.lyx.org/).
