I virtually never use the online help in Mac OS X, so I'm not sure
whether this dates back to when I first got this machine a couple of
months ago or if something's gone awry since then, but Help Viewer is
nigh-useless on my G5 (running 10.3.4 and fully up-to-date via Software
Update).

The search function never returns any results, and the back-arrow takes
multiple rapid clicks to actually go back once I'm on the "no results"
screen.

Additionally, any attempt to look at the content (not branches in the
tree of browse topics, but the actual help content) of Apple-provided
help gets a window empty except for one 'word': "TopicListNoResults."

This behavior persists when I try accessing help in a new, clean account.

I've poked around online a bit, and found only a couple of references to
this behavior via Google (web and usenet). The fixes mentioned -
deleting certain files from my Caches and Preferences directories -
haven't helped.

Any thoughts?

When you say online help, do you mean the occasional Help Viewer link that may
need to go onto the Web itself , rather than a local help file? Or is it
getting stuck locally ?

As recent questions of mine to this group suggest (practiically the same
question as yours) I experienced broken Help during an install of Panther, but
by the time I had done the Software updates, things had cleared themselves up.
It might be important to stress FULLY up to date, as some updates do not show
up as available until you have installed the previous update. I also think
there may be a chance that you may have to restart before you will see the
changes take full affect.

Last time I hit a Help "Open this for me" link that caused all the security
bruhaha, it worked as previously. I noticed it may be a bit more sluggish in a
subtle way, but it isn't refusing to link, as it did with partial updates.

Also, there may be a chance, if the link was of the type Open this app for me,
that the app was not where it was expected to be. It seems that Archive and
install took some older versions of things out, as it said it would, without
necessarily putting the new version in a simlar place. I had trouble finding
the new panther version of Apple System Profiler, for example, and initially,
found an older copy to try first, to no avail.

I have this problem, though my helpviewer kick into action quite easily
if I'm online (=connected to the internet). If I'm not connecte, I
basically get the spinning ball.
The prefs/cache deletes offered by this group have not fixed my problem
either.
I installed LittleSnitch but it isn't alerting me about helpviewer
trying to connect, so I'm still unclear as to what is happening.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Local. I was using online in its older :) "computer-hosted, rather than
paper" sense.

I agree. That's why I noted I was fully up-to-date per SU.

It won't alert you if Help is allowed to connect by default.
Check the list of rules.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I did. There isn't any application listed as help viewer, there is a
list of rules that Little Snitch provides by default that I don't
understand and therefore don't really want to tinker with them (such as
configd, host, lookupd, natd,mDNSresponder, nmblookup, ntpd , ntpdate,
or slpd) -- most I could figure out is that these are UNIX applications
but I can't tell whether they're involved with HelpViewer.

And then there are 4 rules for "any applications" that allow TCP
connecctions to 0.0.0.0 through 0.0.0.255 as well as local network,
multicast addresses and broadcast addresses (I have no idea what these
mean except for the local network).<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I don't know why Snitch wouldn't warn you. Maybe it's some
glitch associated with the help viewer "security update" of
5/24/04, or the URL-handler security update of 6/7/04.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
