I would like to password protect my startup disk when booting up on
System 9.2.2. The Help files seem to be centered around file sharing
protection. I just want to require a password in order to boot up the
computer.

Could someone aim me in the right direction?

Rush.

To require a password before being able to boot you would have to
enable an Open Firmware password. Boot into the Open Firmware.
(Command-Option-O-F) At the command prompt, type "password" (without
the quotes, of course). You will be prompted to enter in the password
you wish to use. Type your password, press the return key, retype your
password again, and press return to verify that that the first password
you typed is indeed the password you want. Type "setenv security-mode
full" Then type "reboot."

The Multiple Users Control Panel would probably provide adequate
password protection preventing users from logging in, albeit after the
boot process has completed.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Go to the control panel Multiple Users and you can choose to set your
password there. You can also set it up to use voice recognition as your
password.
