I'm trying to create a smooth gradient. Adobe Help Viewer tells me that
after selecting the gradient tool, I should "Click inside the gradient
sample in the options bar to display the Gradient Editor dialog box."

However, when i click on the gradient sample(s), no dialogue box
appears. Is there a secret to finding this Gradient Editor? I've tried
Control-click, Option-click, CMD-click. Nothing makes the Gradient
Editor dialogue appear.

Searching for it in PS Help shows nothing; same result from the Adobe
website.

Or can the Gradient Editor be accessed some other way?

I think that you need to make a selection first. nothing <> everything,
at least for this case.

When I click on the gradient samples in the option bar (with nothing
selected), I get a 'picker box' only. (Don't remember the name...) IF
I make some selection, pick the gradient tool, then click the gradient
options in the options bar, I get a gradient editor box.

Adabe has a Photoshop forum on its web site and there's also a newsgroup
on Photoshop. Posting on either of those forums is your best bet for
dealing with Photoshop questions.
