I think the locked file problem has been solved. Panther showed the
desktop was locked by the owner - me. I unlocked it but that didn't
help. However, clicking on "Apply to enclosed items" seems to have
solved the problem.

Frankly, I have no idea what I did or why it worked. I also seem to
think that I didn't see the padlock under Jaguar, or maybe I just missed
it.
