Well, I recently got a new iMac and did the transfer thingee of all my
stuff and now Photoshop Elements 1.0 doesn't work right anymore. Not
surprising, I guess--that was the oldest piece of software I still used
on a regular basis. So I guess I'm going to be upgrading to 3.0,
unless I can find the disc and get it reinstalled properly (even that
might not do the trick, though, I guess).
A few questions:
1) I'm thinking of getting a Nikon D70 camera. Does Elements 3.0 have
the ability to read the "raw" format from this camera in any way? Info
I've seen so far is unclear.
2) Just out of sheer paranoia, I need to ask about my favorite feature
in 1.0, namely the "save for web" feature. Is this significantly
changed in 3.0? The best possible answer would be that it has not
changed one iota, because it was perfect already, IMHO. :-)
3) Any other stupidness or dumb consumerist bells and whistles in 3.0
that are likely to be annoying, compared to 1.0? Nice features that
mysteriously disappeared over the course of two upgrade versions? Or
is this in general a good upgrade?

I have a D-70 and Elements 3.0. Elements reads my NEF files without any
problem.

I never used 1.0. 3.0 has 'Save for web.' Whether it's changed, I can't
say.

Sorry, but I have no basis for any comparisons. It seems to work fine. I'm
using 10.2.8 on a dual-processor G3.

From the inside flap of the box: "Camera raw file support. Get truer,
higher quality output by working with the complete rawdata files from
your digital camera." NOTE that this is from an Elements 3.0 for
Windows box (they've separated the boxes for 3.0).

Dunno.

It's been touted by 2.0 users as a fine thing to do.
Have you looked at any of the Adobe forums on it -
adobe.photoshop.elements comes to mind.
Good luck. I have 2.0 and can't do 3.0 on my system.

I don't remember elements 1, 3 is working very well and got some
photoshop reserved features like healing brush...
Why don#'t you look at:

Adobe's site lists all RAW-supported models. The D70 is on the list.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Photoshop Elements question |

There are quite a few camera offering "raw 16bits" that aren't supported.
RAW is not a single standard format, it's a vague description.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Photoshop Elements question |

Camera RAW is seldom 16 bits, if ever. RAW is usually 12 bits. When
converted to TIFF, you have the option to convert to 16 bits TIFF
(meaning 4 bits will simply remain empty).

Nevertheless, whether 12, 14 or 16 bits, different manufacturers' RAW
formats vary; it's not a standard.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Photoshop Elements question |

True. That's why Adobe suggests DNG as a new standard for RAW files.
Hopefully the camera manufacturers will adopt it (although I have my
doubts they will).

As long as they think there is some competitive advantage to custom
formats, Adobe can go whistle, for all they care. I hope they decide on
a single standard...but it's probably better if I just lie down and
breathe quietly for a while.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Photoshop Elements question |
