Post subject: Powerbook Issues

Hey there, I'm wondering if someone can help me out? I'm using (or at least I was using) an older powerbook and running OS 9.2 It recently crashed and will not restart. I can occasionally get the happy computer face, and sometimes to the loading screen, but I invariably get an "illegal instruction" error, or "bus error". I was able, once, to load from the OS disk, and re-installed the system software, but at that point got a 'finder error' and the computer froze. Since then it will turn on but nothing happens at all. I've tried holding down shift, the space bar, the c button and have even tried holding my breath, but nothing works. Is it new hard drive time or is there a prayer? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! [/i]

Can you no longer boot from the installation disc? If you can then you
need to repair the hard drive before reinstallation. If you can't then
it sounds like hardware (not the hard drive though). Have you tried
removing and reseating any RAM ?

I can't reboot at all. Prior to this I was able to use disk first-aid to repair it...I haven't tried removing and reseating the RAM. I guess I'll give that a shot. Thanks!

Try resetting the PMU. How you do this depends on which model PB you
have. Go to Apple and select Support and put 'reset PMU" in the
search box. One of the articles will have the info on how to reset the
PMU in your miodel.

Resetting the PMU may allow you to boot from the PB hard drive or the
system discs. You can run the Disk Utility from the system disc to
check your drive.

How old is the PB? You may also need a new PRAM battery. Some PBs
won't boot if the PRAM battery is bad.

The hard drive would be lower down than some other things on my list of
possible culprits.
