It there a driver that would allow printing with an Epson CX8400 under
System 9? Mac G4 1GD Dual Mirror Door.?
The printer works as advertized on OS 10.4.11. I previously used an
Epson CX3200 on OSx and OS9. I would like to print some documents from
WriteNow under OS 9.2.2.
Any guidance would be apperciated. TIA

Epson does not make OS 9 drivers for this model. It is possible that you
could find an Epson OS 9 driver that would be compatible enough to work. But
this would be trial and error.
Are you familiar with the process of installing printer drivers on dual boot
Macs?

I guess my answer would be no. I've installed drivers in the System 9
folder and I've installed drives software in OSX. For the CX3200 they
were seperate installers. So I'm not sure of your question as it refers
to Dual Boot machines, and would the Epson web site be the best source
of these OS9 drivers.
Incidently, I can print in Classic with the CX8400, but I have no
control ovr the print settings. It appears to always print in Color-
Normal.

On dual boot machines, you need to install separate drivers for OS 10 and OS
9. And you need to install them while booted into their respective systems.
So for an OS 9 driver, you would boot up into OS 9 (not just running classic)
and install the OS 9 Epson driver.
Since there doesn't seem to be an OS 9 driver specifically for the CX8400,
then your next best bet would be to install all the OS 9 drivers that you can
find on Epson's website, and try each of them to see if you can get one that
is close enough to allow compatibility.
What printer is selected in the Chooser when you are able to print via
classic?
Also, do you have a specific reason to keep using WriteNow? As this is no
longer a supported program, eventually you will need to switch if you want to
keep using newer Mac hardware and software. You might consider converting
your WriteNow documents into OS 10 compatible format, and moving to an OS 10
word processing program. It seems easier than finding installing and testing
drivers.

OK Stephen, now I understand your question. Yes, I've always done
installations that way.
While printing in Classic, only the CX3200 shows in the Chooser.
When I choose Print in Classic, the print screen allows me to choose
the CX8400, but the only settings are # of pages and range of pages.
I bought my first Mac in March of 1985. I started generating word
processing documents in MacWrite and then in WriteNow. I didn't get a
Dual Boot machine until 2003. In all that time I ended up with
something less than 1000 documents. Admittedly, most of them are
historical only.
Many of the documents I still need have been converted to MSW, but
many have not. I haven't found a good way to preserve the formatting.
Saving as Text.rtf and pasting appears to perserve some of the
formatting.
There are other OS9 applications that I need quite often. 1st File
(Formally 1st Base) contains 22 years of financial information. I'm not
technological enough to be able to convert them to a modern OSX based
Data Based Management program. So, for the time being, I'm committed to
a Dual Boot Machine.
I'll jump on the Epson web site and see if I can determine the last
printer they have that had OS9 drivers and start backward from there.
Just as an aside - I kept a MAC 7600 which is networked with my G4
and using Data Bridge software I can print to a LaserWriterII from my
G4. However, the Laser printer is badly in need of a cleaning, if I
could just remove the covers. - How's that for hanging onto old stuff.
Thanks for your comeback.

Just as a final comment - I downloaded every driver for OS9 from the
Epson site. Installed each one of them. They all were printer specific,
and none of them recognized the CX8400. I guess I was hoping for a
generic driver that could handle a varitey of printers. Epson doesn't
provide such a driver. I could try other brands but I think I'd run
into the same thing. In the meantime, I'll keep my eye open for that
Generic dirver.

The only generic drivers I know about are for OS 10. In the OS 9 world, I
know that some of the Laserwriter drivers are considered somewhat generic,
but these drivers only work on laser printers.
Just to be clear, you booted into OS 9, installed all the various OS 9
drivers, and after selecting each one in turn, you tried to print a simple
document, but the printer never received the print job from the driver,
right?

That's exactly what I did. The print command yielded a screen that
said the "Printer" wasn't recognized. Each of the drivers put a
different printer in the chooser. Selecting those printers yielded the
same result. Of course, there's no CX8400 printer showing on the
Chooser. Additionally, on re-boot, in Sys 9 with the CX8400 connected
and powered up I get a screen that says - "Software needed for the USB
device"USB2.0MFP" is not available. Would you like to look for the
software on the Internet?" Clicking the OK button yields a no
connection screen. (The internet works on the other internet programs
in Sys9)
P.S. - Tried to paste a jpeg of a screen shot here. I guess I don't
know how to do that. (Using Thoth 1.7.2)

Sounds like you did everything right. Unfortunately, the only generic printer
driver I know about is the Laserwriter 8 one. This is designed for Postscript
or Postscript-compatible printers. I don't know if your Epson is
Postscript-compatible or not.
Outside of getting Laserwriter 8 to work, maybe with a used Postcript printer
from eBay. or living with the current no-features driver that you seem to be
using in Classic, I don't have any other good choices.
I guess that I would be looking to transition to OS 10 by putting any new
financial data into an OS 10 program, and keeping an OS 9 system around for
any historical data you needed.

I think that's an excellent suggestion. Can you recommend a simple data
based managment program where I can establish fields, do simple math on
the fields and generate a tab delimited report. In the past I've
concentrated on transfering the data to another program. Far simpler
would be to make a some single entries summarising the totals as of 31
Dec 2007 in a different program.
On other thing I'll try. My CX3200 comes on with an ERROR light.
I've read of some people actually fixing that problem.
http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/printer/38578#2
One drawback - the software to reset the printer software is only
available for PC's. Evidently, one of the causes for that error light
is that the ink pads that catch the ink used during the cleaning cycle
gets saturated. Cleaning the pads is first - reseting the printer is
next. If I get that far, I'll get the use of a PC somehow.
