Anyone recommend a NEW printer that has drivers for OS 9? A neighbour's
elderly inkjet has finally died and moving her from her OS 9 iMac is going
to be very difficult but from my initial trawl of the web, I can't seem to
find a modern printer that has drivers for OS 9.

I need a colour inkjet printer to replace an Epson Stylus 740.

Thanks,
Paul DS.

most vendors stopped making OS 9 drivers years ago. Those who persisted
almost all stopped once Tiger arrived, and you didn't need OS 9 drivers to
print from Classic. All of this means that the odds are excellent that any
printer made after 2004, possibly as late as mid 2005, ain't gonna have OS 9
drivers. It's kinda difficult to find an Epson inkjet that has OS 9 drivers
which have been posted after mid-to-late 2004, for example.

Time to move to OS X. If that's an iMac G3, either think seriously about
getting a new machine or max the RAM and install Panther or Tiger. If it's an
iMac G4, just max the RAM and go with Tiger.

It _might_ be that the drivers for some older printers, such as the Stylus
86, will work with some newer printers, such as the Stylus 88, but I
certainly wouldn't pay to find out for sure.

Two or three months ago, with the same requirement, I bought a
Brother DCP 115C from the Brother refurb site on eBay for some forty
pounds or so.[1]

It's proved to be very satisfactory.

[1] Search ucsm on Google groups for subject title, "OS 9 Compatible Printer?".

That'll work, but it's not a _NEW_ printer. He speced a NEW printer. Ain't
gonna happen. Tiger pretty much killed the OS 9 printer driver market.

Refurbs or second-hand printers, from 2004 or earlier, that will do the job
abound.

He also speced an inkjet. Low-end lasers which have OS 9 drivers and which
are still sold new include the Brother HL-2040 and -2070N. (Same driver,
released in November/December 2004.)

Basically any real Postcript printer will work with even ancient Mac OS
versions using the built-in Laserwriter driver.

There used to be a number of Postscript colour inkjets such as the HP
cp1700 PS, but I'm not sure if any are still around; they tend to be
pricey, too.

What does Canon have these days? I bought a new iP4000 2.5 yrs ago, it
has both OS9 and OS X drivers.

Thanks all. I pretty much expected the answer to be "there aren't any" but
I can say I've done "due dilligence". Maxing out the memory and installing
Tiger isn't really worth it as the hard-drive is small so frankly for the
expense and time, my neighbour might as well buy a new machine.

Thanks,
Paul DS

Paul-

I think you have the best solution, but "there are some"!

Consider the Hewlett Packard Color LaserJet 3800n or 3800dn. It may
cost five times as much as an epson, but it is a current model and does
come with OS 9 drivers.

IDE drives for the old iMac are dirt cheap, they max out at 120gb, sure
you can find a second hand copy of panther (or even cheaper jaguar)
which will which open up nearly all printers to them. Bit of cheap used
ram if its running anything near original ram, which an os9 probably is.
Bit of clever shopping all done for sub £50.

Sub-50quid I'd be impressed but to be honest the biggest "cost" will be the
"free" support I'd need to provide having set all of this up. In many ways
it's probably better to get my neighbour to step up to a new Mac. She can
afford it but in that traditional manner "can afford it" and "ready to spend
it" are different things ;-).

BTW, if Jaguar is OS X 10.2, many new printers don't have drivers for it as
far a I can see. 10.3 is now the oldest supported Mac OS.

As Howard mentioned, quite a few of the Brother (both inkjet
multifunction and laser) printers support OS9.

This one is really end of line, but still available new (the replacement
model is quite a bit more expensive, see the listing below). It's really
useful having ethernet as standard.

Brother are really good printers too.

"Apple MacOS 9 • Microsoft Windows 2000 • Microsoft Windows 98 •
Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition • Microsoft Windows XP Home • Apple
MacOS X" is also for the Brother HL 2030, which is one of the cheapest
printers today.
