If this has come up before, please excuse me, as I just "joined" this
group.

We're finally going to upgrade to an iMac from an early 7300/200 with a
4/600 printer, as we need to migrate from OS 9 to OS X.

What would you consider our options to be for a B&W laser printer? We
need one that can produce excellent text and forms copy (IRS and other
government forms - - both downloaded and completed), and the reviews for
the HP 1300 are very spotty when it comes to the print quality for both
text and graphics. The Apple store people aren't too knowlegeable, and
Google searches have been somewhat obtuse.

We're not stuck on any brand, but we do need reliability and excellent
text and formatted output.

TIA,

George

You might want to wait a bit. Imac G4's are no more. They're being
replaced with a G5 equivalent, to be announced late June.
If you don't believe me, check out www.appleinsider.com
If you insist on getting a G4 Imac, have a look at the low end HP
laserjet 1012. It's cheap and has better reviews than the 1300.

Hi TC -

Thanks for the "heads up!" Will wait.

Cheers, George

I have the HP 1012 and it works great. It is often on sale at Office Max
for $150 after rebates.

If this is for a business with high-volume printing, you may want to
look at one of the more expensive laserwriters. A Mac friend told me
that the 1012 doesn't have a replaceable drum. Doesn't matter to me, as
ours is for home use and I will certainly get my money's worth.

Whatever you get, you'll probably want it to have ethernet so that you
don't need a separate print server. And you'll want Appletalk support,
especially if you have OS9 Macs on your network.

Hi Walt -

We're now planning to get a printer that provides connection via
ethernet. We don't have to deal with network problems; however, Pat and
I do grind out quite a bit of paper - - most of it on very short notice
- - for our various committee and foundation. assignments. Also, I
need the capability to print out somewhat voluminous documents, such as
IRS Forms 990 for Nonprofit entities. So, I guess we'll have to go with
a business-level printer.

Our serial 4/600 has seen better days, and using it has been akin to
watching the grass grow < grin >.
