Since you added onto a thread, I'm not sure what you have tried. Go back
over my previous suggestions in this thread. I would start by creating a new
User in System Preferences and test Entourage there in a new blank Identity.
Let me know what happens.

Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the
New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching. Test Office there.

After you test in a new User, go back to your regular User and remove your
Microsoft User Data folder from Documents. Open Entourage with a new blank
Identity. Does it open OK. If yes then the problem is in your Identity. If
not the problem is in your User's folder.

I believe that you would get an error like 'trial period over'. It's hard
for us to give a lot of info on the trial since we don't have it installed
to test.

No! Drag the Microsoft User Data folder or the Office 2008 Identities folder
to Shared. This moves only. From Shared to the new User copies the file.

1. Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to
the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching. Test Office
there.
(this create a Microsoft User Data folder)
2. Drag from Shared your Identities folder and replace the current Main
Identity to test your Identity in the new User. (this copies so your data is
safe)
3. After you have finished testing, drag from Shared back to your Microsoft
User Data folder.

This will not affect Word or Excel, but if you try to use them they will
probably create a new blank Microsoft User Data folder. This is why you need
to move your Identity back after testing.

OK I just did that but when I try to open entourage in my test user i get the message "cannot access your data. to attempt to fix the problem, rebuild the data base" does that mean that i did it wrong or that there is a problem with my entourage?

You have to drag the folder to Shared.

Open your Documents folder
Find the Microsoft User Data folder
Open the Office 2008 Identities folder
Inside this folder is your Identity named "Main" by default
Drag the Main folder to Shared
Switch to your new User account (I prefer Fast User Switching)
Open Entourage in the new User. It will create a new blank Microsoft User
Data folder.
Test in the blank Identity first.
Next drag in your Main Identity from Shared and let it replace the blank one
you tested. (it's safe as it is copied when you drag it from Shared)
Test
When you finish testing and boot in your regular User's folder, drag your
Identity back to your Documents folder --> Microsoft User Data folder -->
Office 2008 Identities folder.

Remove your Identity folder and see if it opens in a new Identity. If yes,
then drag the problem Identity back and rebuild it. Make sure you have
plenty of room on your computer. You will need double the size of your
database plus 10% breathing room for the system. The more room you have the
greater success you will have in rebuilding. Read this article:

Rebuilding a damaged database that exceeded size limit

I am running Entourage 2004 on X Tiger and have recently been unable to open messages with an attachment. Entourage simply crashes if I try to access the message. I have, however, been able to access everything satisfactorily on a nearby machine with identical software. Can anyone help please?

Hi Keith,
When you say you can access on another machine, is this the message or did
you move over your Identity?

You need to determine if the problem is your Identity, your User folder or
the base system files.

See this page for testing steps:

See Troubleshooting basics for more help:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/basics.html>

When you reply please give version into on your machine, Entourage and
Tiger. For example:

iMac 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo, Memory 2GB, Mac OS 10.3.5
Entourage 2004 v4.2

I'm back again, sorry for the delay. The link you posted didn't go anywhere. Also, as I said before I am really not very computer savy so can you give me complete step by step instructions to do what you said above? And which identity folder am I removing. Also when you say I need a lot of space on my computer, do you mean that the program itself will take up a lot of room or just the rebuilding process?

Thanks so much for your help.

Looks like the forum software corrupted the long URL.

Try this tiny URL.

<http://tinyurl.com/66vn8o>

In your Documents folder you'll find the Microsoft User Data folder. Inside
the MUD folder is your Office 2004 Identities. Move your Identity named
"Main" by default to the desktop. Open Entourage and it will create a new
blank Main Identity. This will tell you if it is Entourage or a problem in
your User's folder or your OS files.

If you have more Identities, I would remove them all. Just drag back to
overwrite the blank one.

> Also when you say I need a lot of space on my

The rebuilding process takes a lot of room. I offer the service to rebuild
Identities if you do not have the physical room to do them yourself.
Recovering a database is very time consuming and I do charge for it. The
last one I did took over 12 hrs to recover all the data and transfer it to a
new Identity.

It's your Identity. You can try rebuilding to see if that helps.

1. In the Finder make a backup copy of your database for added security.
2. Open Entourage with option key down and select rebuild.

It's possible the rebuild will fail if it's severely corrupted. Your only
choice would be to start with a new Identity. Unless you can open an
Identity you cannot salvage any data.

what do you mean salvage any data? i thought all the emails are from their respective websites (hotmail, etc) i haven't used entourage for almost a year so i really don't care about any data that is on there that i can just get back again if i make a new account or something. is there a way to just completely delete the old account and start a new one? do you think that would help the problem?

If you do no have any POP accounts, then delete the Identity and start with
a new one.

Frankly, it's very confusing trying to help. Your details are very
confusing.
