Hi,
The Endnote CWYW add-in causes quite a lot of problems. You *can* use
Endnote without it installed, look in the Endnote help under "using a
non-supported word processor" or something such, and in Edit | Prefs,
Formatting, you need to uncheck the "suggest formatting" option, or else
anytime you Scan Paper in Endnote, it will say, "use the add-in!"
(Brainstorming...)
Endnote has two sets of CWYW in EN 5, one for 98 and one for 2001, I assume
you are using the right one?
Do you have other add-ins installed in Word? Conceivably they could be
conflicting?
Is your Office 98 fully updated? Here's a link to download the latest
update, which includes a link on checking whether you have other necessary
stuff.

Other than that, I can't help you. By the way, in general a better place to
post such problems might be the newsgroup
microsoft.public.mac.office.word but I don't know whether the people there
(including me) will have anything more to offer in this case than "remove
the CWYW".
However, I have gotten 24-hr responses via email from Endnote when I
reported technical problems at this link:

So they can at least tell you whether you are the only person having this
problem, or whether there is a known workaround. Did you *ever* manage to
make these work, or have you just installed EN 5?
