Post subject: Problem getting Mac mini back from ubuntu
Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>misc (more info?)

Well, I decided to try ubuntu 7.10 out on my Mac mini, so I downloaded
and burned the 7.10 live CD. figured that way I could test it live
without actually using up a drive or re-partitioning to install it.

It seemed easy at the time, I set the startup disk target in System
Preferences to be the 'foreign' OS on the CD drive and restarted. Ubuntu
started up and I took it for a test drive.

Then everything went sour. I quit Ubuntu by choosing restart (thinking I
could remove the CD) and restart from the hard drive, back into OSX.

Wrong .... now it seems to be constantly trying to reboot into Ubuntu.
If the CD isn't there, it winds up with a large flashing underscore
cursor in the top left and won't respond to anything.

I've tried:
rebooting into Ubuntu and shutting down (as opposed to restart)
restart with option key pressed
restart with command-option-p-r
restart with shift key pressed
restart with command-s

Nothing works any more, almost as if it's been hijacked by ubuntu which
is not allowing any other OS choice. All of the above result in the
black screen with the flashing cursor.

What'd I miss ?

Anybody know how to get rid of Ubuntu so I can get back to work ?

You told System Preferences to use the Ubuntu CD as the startup disc;
until you tell it otherwise, it will try to startup from the CD. It's
preferable, and easier, to just hold down the C key when you start up
from any optical disc, because you don't reset the system firmware that
way. So, you can now start from your OS X install CD/DVD by holding down
the C key and inserting the disc at startup, and then change your System
Preferences from there, or you can hold down the Option key at startup
and choose your internal drive from the options there, and then reset
your System Prefs.

Try rebooting with the Mac Install disc, then resetting the startup
disk, maybe. You may have to reset the EFI or NVRAM whatsitmajig.

I agree that that's what I SHOULD have done, and if I can ever unkam the
damn thing, that's what I WILL DO if I ever burn another Ubuntu disk :-)

Tried that and it still keeps looking for an Ubuntu source.

I specified that I had already tried that in the original message.

Thank you for trying.

I tried restarting with C key depressed and the Mac install disk
inserted and got the same behaviour.

I did a startup with command-option-p-r already; how is this different
from resetting NVRAM ? I thought they were the same on the Mac Mini.

Thanks for trying.

I don't remember your stating how long you held the command-option-p-r
combination down. I seem to recall that each time the machine "bongs"
with the keys down, a few more parameters are reset to the factory
values. I typically hold it for three "bongs", recalling that at four I
start undoing things I ought leave alone.

I wasn't sure how long I was supposed to hold it either, so I kept them
all down until the screen went black and the cursor showed up. Got a
nasty cramp too from trying to hold all four keys down with one hand
while working the power switch with the other :-)

FWIW, the mini doesn't make any noises at startup anymore.

Thanks

It seems whatever you did during Ubuntu installation overwrote the
normal Apple EFI stuff with Ubuntu's grub boot loader. This is bad news.

If you don't care about Ubuntu, I would suggest resetting your firmware
with the appropriate firmware restore CD:

According to this article, you may be able to boot into Ubuntu and
configure grub to boot Mac OS X:

Well, I checked out the URL and downloaded the proper Restoration CD and
fed it in as per the instructions. It still failed, and now I can't get
the Restoration CD out of the drive, so I'm in even worse shape, as now
I can't even boot into Ubuntu.

Guess I better take it back to the shop.

Holding down the mouse button while starting up the computer doesn't
eject the CD?

Hmm. Well what it says (on the Apple page):

<">
or you can take your computer to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized
Service Provider to restore your firmware.

I'm assuming you have another computer to work with. Take a look at
Refit:

I mean, it's not like things can get any worse.

The disk span for a few seconds, then stopped, then the screen went
black and the flashing cursor appeared again.
