OK. I think Ubuntu supported PPC Macs for a while too.

According to yesterday's Macintouch at least the Macbook Pros have a
built-in diagnostic mode which you get by holding down "D" when you
power on. If EFI isn't completely hosed on your machine, maybe that
will work?

Though I'm inclined to say just take it back to Apple and get them to
restore the firmware :-)
