My wife is having difficulty accessing new incoming e-mail on her iBook.
When she opens the mail program, the program says it is attempting to
download ~300 new messages, but can never complete the download, even if she
keeps it running for hours. She subscribes to several listservs, so her mail
builds up quickly, and she hasn't been able to see new e-mail for several
days. She can send e-mail out w/o difficuty. I've had no problem accessing
my (lower volume) e-mail using a Powermac desktop and Mozilla via a shared
connection to the same Comcast cable modem.

Suggestions?

TIA
Paul T.

Does she get any at all? It's possible that her POP server is
in a bad state. Try getting the mail with a different client
(and having it leave the mail on the server if you still want
to get it into the Mail.app).

Plain Bread alone for e-mail, thanks. The rest gets trashed.

Your wife should probably contact her ISP to see verify that her
Mail.app settings are all correct.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I have this problem occasionally with a small, not-very-well-run mail
server that I use. It seems like certain emails contain characters that
freeze either my mail client or their POP server.(?) When I get to one,
it sticks at 'downloading header', and then times out. The mail server
sees the whole session as incomplete, so doesn't delete the emails that
I was able to download.
This happens with Mail and with Popmonitor. However, my Palm mail app
can see and delete these messages.

If you call your mail service provider, and have the number of the
offending message, you may be able to get them to delete just it. Or
they can clean out the whole mailbox. Maybe they can do something on
their end about accepting such messages.

Your wife might try a different mail service, ot a different mail client
too.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

This sounds as though it could have been the problem; when I tried to access
my wife's mail account via M$ Outlook Express on my PC at work, the system
would consistently stop downloading and time out when it got to message #117
of 325. Whatever the cause, the problem spontaneously cured itself
yesterday; no idea why or how. Thanks to all.
