Suddenly, I'm unable to receive my ATT.Worldnet email through Outlook
Express. I can send just fine.
(Admittedly, I'm using Verizon DSL, but they deny they're at fault. ATT
agrees with that assessment. And I'm able to send and receive with my
Verizon email account.)
Coincidentally, my problem began exactly when ATT started having trouble
with their email server, a month ago. I've checked and re-checked my
settings with ATT and Verizon, and the settings are as they should be. I
have spent hours upon hours upon hours on the phone with their pimple-faced
technicians who seem unable to solve this problem and have nothing better to
do than waste my time, call me back at 7 am, and randomly close trouble
tickets and tell me they can't even transfer me to a supervisor. Welcome to
the 21st Century, I guess.
When I skipped the DSL, and tried accessing my ATT email using Outlook
Express via dial-up (Remote Access), lo -- my email came through. However,
an ATT "Tier 2" technician told me that's because this setup skipped the
"secure socket layer" of Outlook Express, which is why it worked.
The ATT "Tier 2" technician told me that the problem resides with the
"secure socket layer," which is now corrupt. she claimed. She said the only
fix would be to reinstall Outlook Express, which I did -- to no avail. She
now says she cannot do anything else for me, but wished me good luck.
If anyone has any suggestions on why I'm having difficulty receiving my ATT
email via Outlook Express, I'd be appreciative if you'd write.

I've not had to deal with mail accounts that require SSL before, so I can't
necessarily confirm or deny the information that you've been given by the
technical support department of ATT. I suspect though that you're being
blagged (a British term for "not being told the truth, the whole truth and
nothing but the truth").
Does the ATT service provide you with a Website to conduct any maintenance
updates on your account? I ask this because if such a facility exists, you
could just set your ATT e-mail address to forward all of its mail to your
functioning Verizon address. Thus you would still be able to receive your
mail (none of your contacts would see any difference when they try to e-mail
you) and of course you can still send mail as well.
Perhaps you could ask ATT about "mail forwarding" and see what they say
(even the most rudimentary e-mail accounts offer this service for free
nowadays!)
