Hi all. I have an old Mac G4. I have Mandrake 8.2 PPC currently installed
on it. I want to upgrade to Mandrake 9.1. I am having trouble getting the
durn thing to boot from the install CD.
Once again: This is a question about Mandrake Linux 9.1. I am asking here
because I think it may be hardware-related and the Mandrake Linux
newsgroups are far more Intel hardware oriented.
Details
=======
CD was burned from the PPC ISOs downloaded off Mandrake's Website.
I am able to mount the cd's normally and browse their contents. I am
mounting them on the G4 which has MDK8.2ppc installed. So I am pretty
sure the CDs are kosher.
I have taken out the original-equipment DVD player and replaced it with a
generic 48X cdrom drive. The drive works -- as I said I *am* able to mount
cds!
When I hold down the "C" key as the Mac turns on nothing happens.
When I hold cmd-option-o-f as the Mac boots, the OpenFirmware prompt comes
up.
When I choose "cdrom" from the OpenFirmware prompt, nothing happens except
that the OpenFirmware prompt clears and refreshes itself.
I also tried yaboot, according to the MDK docs:
CD:2,\\yaboot
But this does not work. I get an error along the lines of "can't find
cd:2" or "yaboot: unknown word"
I don't know much about Mac hardware. Could the generic CDROM drive be
causing a problem? I have an old MacOS9 disc -- I will try booting from
that. I will update this post when that happens. Until then, HELP!
Also, what else am I missing?
Thanks!
