Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>games>action (more info?)

I've just downloaded Q3F plus the three updates. The Q3F folder has
the following files:

q3f2_pak0.pk3
readme.txt
description.txt
q3f.ico
license.txt
howtos

The "txt" files can be ignored, but where do the rest go? I can't find
anything about where to put the files. Do I just plop the files in a
folder called "Fortress" and then drop that in the Quake 3 folder?

Has anybody done this? The hope of playing Q3T was the main reason I
picked up Q3. QTF (the original) is still the best online game I've
ever played - imho.

I assume the pak files from the three updates go in the same place as
the above files...

When you install a Q3A mod, only the *.pk3 files are mandatory.
So for playing Q3F, just put the "q3f2_pak0.pk3" file into the folder
"q3f2" (this last one should have been created after decompacting the
Q3F archive file).

After this, all you need to know is that in "~/Library/Application
Support/Quake3/<mod_name>/", the config file for the new mod will be
there.
Then launch Q3A and choose the desired mod from the "MOD" menu.

Yup. Played my first Q3F game yesterday. I'm really *really* bad at
it.. ;)

A related question: I downloaded a bundle of 3rd party q3f2 maps. They
all came in file pairs like this:

q3f_ultima.cfg
q3f_ultima.pk3

Where do they go? They're currently stored in the q3f2 folder, but
they're not available to any of the mods - including q3f2. Do they
even belong in the same folder? I've tried starting my own online
games just to see if I can find them, but they don't appear on the
menu list.

When you have downloaded a map that comes with a *.cfg file, then that
means there are some tweaks (either to enhance the gameplay on that map
or to change some others settings inherent to it, such as models, etc.)
that can be used on the map.

The best way to found them is to place them onto "~/Library/Application
Support/Quake3/<mod_name>/" (where <mod_name> should be q3f2 or
something approaching).

Good. But you'll have trouble finding servers with players though..
Worse, most of them are protected with passwords. B(

But if you should happen upon a really bad player going under the nick
"Clueless Newbie", that's me. B)

Today, for some strange reason, those maps started showing up on the
maplist (the one within the game). First only two, then half a dozen,
and now all of them. I have no idea why. But now they work so I'm
happy. B)

They're located in the "Quake 3/q3f2/" folder - both the .pk3s and the
..cfgs.

Perhaps because this is mostly an "old" q3a mod.
Actually i'm seeing 26 Q3F2 servers. All of them are empty.

Good.

Before 1.32 cames out i used to put some maps under "/Applications/Quake
3/<mod_name>" but with 1.32, some mods didn't find custom maps at this
place, so after digging on some forums/FAQs, i've found that placing
maps onto "~/Library/Application Support/Quake3/<mod_name" was more
reliable.

PS. if you want to try a really funny mod, check this out:
