G5 too quiet - I've had a G5 tower for about a year now, and there's something about it which bugs me but obviously hasn't had a real high priority. The baseline volume is very low. With the Output volume and Alert volume set all the way up, the UI sound effects are

A/V Macs - It has been less than a month since I switched to OS X and I already miss my old Beige G3. I had to give it up for OS X. Which means that I also had to give up the A/V That's the part that hurts. That was a great machine. Is there a newer A/V..

Can anyone point me towards comparisons of noise emissions of the
various desktop Mac models? My eMac is very noisy and I'm Iooking for
something quieter. I have Googled around and haven't found anything
recent enough to be useful. Thanks.

The noisiest part of a computer is its fan. My first defective iMac
started off with a very loud fan, but upgrading the software took care
of this. Apparently the speed of the fan is controlled by software.

I don't have a comparison chart or numbers, but this is my experience:

Annoyingly loud:

- eMac
- all "tower-style"-G4 models, especially the G4 MDD
- iMacs up to the early G5-models

Rather quiet:

- most Power Mac G5 models (some get loud under heavy load)

Very quiet:

- G4 Cube (with silent HDD and passively cooled graphics card)
- the last G5 iMacs
- all current models including the Mac Pro
- all portables

Just to put an exclamation point on that list, I just replaced my G4 MDD
with a 24" iMac. I've gone from the windtunnel racket that I can hear all
the way down the hall to whisper quiet.

If there's a downside, it's that the gentle hum lulls me to sleep if I'm
working late at night :)
