Hi I'm looking for advice for an inexpensive PCI card (for a dual 1.4
gHz Powermac) to output NTSC composite or S-video, so I can record
directly to VHS. Nothing fancy needed, this will be it's only use other
than displaying on an external TV monitor.

Thanks for any help.

You don't say what you are trying to do...

If the original source file is in iMovie AND you have a digital camcorder
you can plug the firewire into the camcorder then attach the VHS to the
S-video or composite of the camcorder. Set the VHS on record then send the
video to the camcorder and it should simultaneously go to the VHS.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I recommend a DV->Analog converter instead of a PCI card. It is much
easier to set up and there will be no driver problems because you're
using the Mac's built-in firewire output. You can get a converter for
about $200 (e.g. Canopus ADVC-50).

Not on my Sony TRV-120 camcorder. I have to dub it to Digital-8 first,
then play the tape back to record to VHS. Anything plugged into the
camera's video input/output jack overrides the firewire connection.

I can pass-through VHS video to digitize input via firewire, but not
pass-through output.

Still looking for a video output card...

Your TRV-120 can do it... Disable "a/v -> DV out" in the menu, and you
now will have DV -> A/V out :-)

If you mean the Dazzle Hollywood DV Bridge, that sells for $200-250. As
I stated in my original post, I'm looking for an inexpensive PCI card
for output to NTSC only...don't need analog-to-DV input features.

These cards are available for PCs for under $50...anyone had success
using them with a Mac?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

The PC ones won't work. There were some threads on xlr8yourmac.comabout
hacking drivers to make old Mac TV cards work in OS X. If that doesn't
work, and the trick someone else mentioned about your TRV-120 doesn't
either, the option I use with my Dual G4 is the ATi Radeon 7000. It has
S-video output that I use to put video to VHS. Be aware that iMovie 3
will not output rendered video to S-video. At best you will get scaled
DV video, which will look poor. You will need to render to an analog
codec (Apple Video or none) at 640x480 then use QuickTime Pro or
something like BTV Pro to output full screen video.

the Bridge is your best bet.. ALl of your files will be DV. NO special
codec. You aren't going to find a $50 bridge.. which is essentially what you
are asking for.
