I had an interesting situation. Double-clicking a thumbnail produced
the dreaded exclamation point. I checked and discovered the image was
actually still in the library but the database had lost track of it. I
restored it by dragging it back into iPhoto and deleting the bad one,
but I wonder if there is another or better way to do this.

I forgot. This is in the latest iPhoto. The older ones had a way to
rebuild the database that does not seem to be available in the latest
version.

It's the same for this version as it's ever been, as far as I recall:
Press Command-Shift-Option while launching iPhoto.

According to the supporting documentation for iPhoto help:
To rebuild the iPhoto library:

1. Make a backup of the folder ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library in the
Finder, and set it aside. Important: A backup allows you to
restore the iPhoto Library should anything go wrong during the
rebuild (such as a power failure) that prevents the library from
rebuilding correctly.
2. Quit iPhoto if it is open.
3. For iPhoto 4.0.3 or earlier: Hold down the Shift and Option keys
on the keyboard.
For iPhoto 5.0 or later: Hold down the Command and Option keys on
the keyboard.
4. Open iPhoto.
5. Keep the keys held down until you are prompted to rebuild the
library.
6. Click Yes.

That's what happens when I trust my memory. Well, pressing
Command-Shift-Option in iPhoto 7 just happens to work, too.

Ah!! CMD-SHIFT-OPT. I could not remember that and I could not find it
in help. I tried CMD and OPT by themselves with no effect. Thanks. I
will try to remember that but I will probably forget, yet again!

Even better. Thanks again. Is this in help? How do you find it?

Yes. I searched for "rebuild library" and "rebuild database" but they
didn't turn up anything so I tried just "rebuild".

Ah, yes! It is in the support articles. I missed that the other day.
Thanks. It says 4 or later and I must have seen the 4 and missed the
later.
