Greetings,
I have a Beige G3/266 Desktop with 256 RAM running Mac OS 9.2.2. The only
hardware upgrade is a USB port installed to the internal PCI slot. Also, the
software did not recognize the USB port so I had to install a USB support
app.
1. What version of Mac OS 10 will run smoothly on my G3?
2. And will Mac OS X be able to recognize the USB port or is this non
recognition due to the CPU and how the computer was configured when it was
made?
Thank you in advance for your comments, help, and considerations.

If you installed OS 9 before you installed the USB port, you probably just
didn't have the USB support files installed.

I have run OS 10.2 just fine on a Beige G3. Video acceleration is not
supported on the built-in video on that machine, though.

I have a 3rd party USB card in mine, and it works fine under OS X, but it
also worked fine under OS 9.2.2 with no additional software, so I'm not
sure about your specific situation.

You are correct. I installed a Macally PCI to USB card after I installed OS
9.2.2. If I installed the USB card before I installed OS 9.2.2 do you think
the software would have detected the USB card and would have installed the
USB support software to utilize the card?

Thanks for your comments and help. I feel better now about installing Mac OS
10 on my Beige G3 desktop and having my USB ports recognized.

I'm not sure about this, but I do know that it's a checkbox in the

It's pretty solid once you're up and running, but the install takes
FOREVER. Also, make sure that you pull any non-Apple RAM (or just leave
the biggest single stick of whatever you have) before running the
installer, and then add it back later. I had problems with completing the
installation before I did this.
Also, 10.2.x is the last version of Mac OS to officially support the
beige, so 10.3 cannot be installed (at least without 3rd party software
hacks).

Thanks, I will keep that in mind. Because I do want to use my USB ports.

This could be a problem. My computer came with 32MB. Soon after purchase
I put in 64MB and a year later I put in 256MB. I hope this will not be a
problem.

Thank you again for your help and comments.

This only matters for OS9, of course, so if it's working now then there's
probably no reason to change it.

Well, I think it's more important that the RAM is consistent than it is
that the RAM is original. The configuration that worked for me to get
through the install was a single 128 MB DIMM, but it wasn't from Apple.
